The men's team épée was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1964 Summer Olympics programme. It was the twelfth appearance of the event. The competition was held October 20–21, 1964, with 86 fencers from 18 nations competing. Herbert Polzhuber
Herbert Polzhuber (June 1938 – 24 June 2015) was an Austrian fencer and modern pentathlete. Considered one of Austria's greatest ''épée'' fencers, he participated at four consecutive Olympic Games in 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976, being a fencer in each in addition to a pentathlete in his first appearance. He is also partly remembered for an incident at the 1965 World Pentathlon Championships, where he allegedly drank 10 beers and a bottle of cognac before firing his pistol into the ground and passing out. Biography Polzhuber was born in June 1938 in Wien, Nazi Germany (present-day Vienna, Austria). He was a member of the athletic club Heeressportverein Wien (commonly shortened to HSV Wien), and was one of only four Olympians affiliated with them. Ian Bowditch
Ian Bowditch (9 March 1939 – 25 February 2008) was an Australian fencer. He competed in the team épée event at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Before this, Ian and his brother Bruce were both awarded full blues for fencing as members of the Melbourne University Fencing Club. Bowditch, who trained as a lawyer, helped draft the Constitution of Nauru while working as an Australian Government Legal Officer prior to Nauru's independence. He later practiced as a barrister at the Victorian Bar for over 25 years (signing the Victorian Bar Roll on 24 November 1983 and retiring in 2003). Ivan Lund
Ivan Bernard Lund (13 May 1929 – 9 April 1992) was an Australian fencer. He competed at four Olympic Games. He was a longstanding member of the Melbourne-based VRI Fencing Club. Achievements Ivan Lund competed in four Olympic Games. In 1952 in Helsinki, he competed in all individual and team competitions with the flute, sword and sabre, but did not reach the finals in any competition. Four years later in Melbourne he was eliminated with the Sword again in the preliminary round of the singles and with the team, also in 1960 in Rome in the Florett singles and with the Sword team. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Lund, who was the flag bearer of the Australian delegation at the opening ceremony, competed individually and with the team with the floret and the sword.
