Fencing At The 1956 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre was one of seven fencing events on the fencing at the 1956 Summer Olympics programme. It was the thirteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held on 5 December 1956. 35 fencers from 17 nations competed. Nations had been limited to three fencers each since 1928. The event was won by Rudolf Kárpáti, the seventh of nine straight Games in which a Hungarian would win the event. Jerzy Pawłowski of Poland took silver and Lev Kuznetsov of the Soviet Union took bronze, the first medals in the event for each nation and the first time since 1924 that any nation other than Hungary and Italy earned a medal in the men's sabre. Background This was the 13th appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. St Kilda Town Hall is a grand, classically styled city hall, located on the corner of Brighton Road and Carlisle Street in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. The first stage, never completed, was built as the municipal offices and public hall for the former City of St Kilda in 1890. Many additions, internal alterations, and changes in appearance were made in the early and mid 20th century, while serving as the municipal and social heart of St Kilda. A devastating fire in 1991 seriously affected the art collection and burnt out the hall itself, and was followed by a prize winning refurbishment and further extension. After Council amalgamations in 1994, it became the base for the larger City of Port Phillip, and further extensions and renovations have occurred. The hall within remains popular for numerous social events, meetings and performances, a role it has served for over 120 years. Jacques Roulot (18 November 1933 – 15 February 2002) was a French fencing, fencer. He competed in the individual and team sabre (fencing), sabre events at the 1956 Summer Olympics, 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the Mediterranean Games in Fencing at the 1955 Mediterranean Games, 1955, where he won a silver medal in the team sabre event, and in Fencing at the 1959 Mediterranean Games, 1959, where he won a gold medal in the team sabre event and a silver medal in the individual sabre event.
