February–March 2024 Welsh Labour Leadership Election
The February–March 2024 Welsh Labour leadership election took place between February and March 2024 to select Mark Drakeford's successor as leader of Welsh Labour, who in turn would become First Minister of Wales. Drakeford announced his resignation and retirement on 13 December 2023, five years after his election. Voting began in February 2024 with the new leader announced on 16 March 2024. Vaughan Gething won the election with 51.7% of the vote. The next scheduled Senedd election is due on or before 7 May 2026. Gething is the first black First Minister of Wales and the first black leader of any country in Europe. At the time of Gething's victory, three of the four governments in the UK had a non-white leader. 2018 Welsh Labour Leadership Election
The 2018 Welsh Labour Party leadership election took place between 9 November and 6 December 2018 to elect a successor to Carwyn Jones as leader of the Welsh Labour Party. Carwyn Jones, who had led Welsh Labour since 2009, announced his intention to resign at the Welsh Labour conference in Llandudno in April 2018. He stated that he would stand down in autumn 2018, and that he would continue to lead the party until then. Procedure On 21 April 2018, at the Welsh Labour conference, Carwyn Jones announced that he would retire as First Minister in the autumn. The conference considered whether to change the voting system for electing a party leader and decided to set up a democracy review, which would report back after Jones had retired. Greyhound racing is an organized, competitive sport in which greyhounds are raced around a track. There are two forms of greyhound racing, track racing (normally around an oval track) and coursing; the latter is now banned in most countries.
