February 2019 Dhaka Fire
On 20 February 2019, a fire broke out in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The fire started in a road accident between a pickup van and a private car. After the collision, the car's gas cylinder exploded. The fire then spread to a group of buildings being used to store chemicals, and quickly expanded to nearby buildings in the densely packed historic district of Chowk Bazaar in Old Dhaka. The fire left at least 80 people dead and 50 others injured. Cause The fire was reported to have originated in the explosion of a cylinder of compressed natural gas in a vehicle, which quickly triggered further fires in buildings and nearby gas cylinders. The blaze was first reported at 22:38, and was reported to be under control by about 03:00. FR Tower Fire
On 28 March 2019, the FR Tower Fire broke out on the eighth floor of the 22-storey FR Tower in the commercial Banani area of Dhaka, Bangladesh around 1:00 pm BST. It caused 25 deaths and more than 70 others were injured. Duronto TV and Radio Today shut down their transmissions when the fire broke out because both of their offices were situated beside the FR tower. Casualties As of 28 March, the death toll was estimated to be at least 26. Among the dead was a Sri Lankan citizen who fell to his death while escaping the fire. In addition, at least 70 people were injured and transported to hospitals with severe burns and lung damage. 2012 Dhaka Fire
The 2012 Dhaka garment factory fire broke out on 24 November 2012, in the Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia district on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. At least 117 people were confirmed dead in the fire, and over 200 were injured, making it the deadliest factory fire in the nation's history. The fire was initially presumed to be caused by an electrical short circuit, but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has since suspected that the fire had been arson and an act of "sabotage" due to the occurrence of previous comparable events. This event and others similar to it have led to numerous proposed reforms in workers' rights and safety laws in Bangladesh. 2010 Dhaka Fire
The 2010 Dhaka fire was a fire in the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 3 June 2010, that killed at least 124 people (117 on spot, others later in hospital). The fire occurred in the Nimtali area of Old Dhaka. Cause The fire was started when an electrical transformer exploded. The head of the fire department speculated that the fire was fanned by perfumes, chemicals and other flammable products stored in shops. The density of the residential area affected made it difficult for firefighters to quell the blaze. Also, the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka and staircases of old buildings made it difficult for fire service equipment to enter the area.
