Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic island group and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. They are located north-northwest of Scotland, and about halfway between Norway ( away) and Iceland ( away). The islands form part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with mainland Denmark and Greenland. The islands have a total area of about with a population of 54,000 as of June 2022. The terrain is rugged, and the subpolar oceanic climate (Cfc) is windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Temperatures for such a northerly climate are moderated by the Gulf Stream, averaging above freezing throughout the year, and hovering around in summer and 5 °C (41 °F) in winter. Marita Petersen
Marita Petersen () (née Johansen (); 21 October 1940 – 26 August 2001) was the first and to date only female Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands and the first female speaker of the Løgting (Parliament). She was elected to the Løgting in 1988 for Javnaðarflokkurin (The Social Democratic Party). In January 1993, she was elected to the post of Prime Minister which she held until September 1994. Later, she became chairman of the parliament from 1994 to 1995. She was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands in a very difficult time with economic crisis. Marita Petersen died of cancer in 2001. Eilif Samuelsen
Torben Eilif Lindenskov Samuelsen (born May 22, 1934) is a former Faroese teacher and politician for the Faroese Union Party. Samuelsen was born in Fuglafjørður. He graduated as a teacher from the Haslev Normal School in 1958 and began his career by teaching in Fuglafjørður, HvalvÃk, and Tórshavn. He served as mayor of the Municipality of HvalvÃk from 1963 to 1965. Samuelsen was the chair of the Faroese Teachers' Association from 1969 to 1980, the chair of the Tórshavn Music School from 1988 to 1998, and the head of the Education Council ( fo, Landsskúlaráðið) and head of the National Cultural Foundation ( fo, Mentanargrunnur Føroya) from 1986 to 1994 and from 1998 to 2000. Rikard Sigmund Long (January 23, 1889 – December 16, 1977) was a Faroese teacher, writer, and politician for the People's Party. Peter Mohr Dam (11 August 1898 – 8 November 1968) was a Faroe Islands politician who was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands), Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party in 1926. Born on 11 August 1898, in Skopun, Faroe Islands, Dam became a teacher in Tvøroyri. He was member of the Faroese Løgting from 1926 until his death in 1968. Education In The Faroe Islands
The levels of education in the Faroe Islands are primary, secondary and higher education. Most institutions are funded by the state; there are few private schools in the country. Education is compulsory for 9 years between the ages of 7 and 16. In the twelfth century education in the Faroe Islands was provided by the Catholic Church. The Church of Denmark took over education after the Protestant Reformation. Modern educational institutions started operating in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and developed throughout the twentieth century. The status of the Faroese language in education was a significant issue for decades, until it was accepted as a language of instruction in 1938. Initially education was administered and regulated by Denmark. In 1979 responsibilities on educational issues started transferring to the Faroese authorities, a procedure which was completed in 2002.
