Racing Games
Racing games are a video game genre in which the player participates in a racing competition. They may be based on anything from real-world racing leagues to fantastical settings. They are distributed along a spectrum between more realistic racing simulations and more fantastical arcade-style racing games. Kart racing games emerged in the 1990s as a popular sub-genre of the latter. Racing games may also fall under the category of sports video games. Sub-genres Arcade-style racing Arcade-style racing games put fun and a fast-paced experience above all else, as cars usually compete in unique ways. A key feature of arcade-style racers that specifically distinguishes them from simulation racers is their far more liberal physics. Whereas in real racing (and subsequently, the simulation equivalents) the driver must reduce their speed significantly to take most turns, arcade-style racing games generally encourage the player to "powerslide" the car to allow the player to keep up their ...

Rosalina (Mario)
Rosalina, known as Rosetta in Japan (ロゼッタ), is a recurring fictional character in the ''Mario'' series of video games. She debuted in ''Super Mario Galaxy'' (2007), where she acts as a non-player character who resides in the Comet Observatory, the game's hub world. Rosalina is the adoptive mother of the Lumas, a fictional species of stars in the game, and also watcher of the cosmos. Rosalina has since appeared as a player character in subsequent ''Mario'' games, such as the ''Mario Kart'', ''Mario Golf'', ''Mario Party'', and the '' Super Smash Bros.'' series. Character development In an interview, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that he had planned the usual kidnapping of Princess Peach, but also "had another cast of characters, a princess from outer space and her family of talking stars, who had a deeper, sadder story that was revealed through elegant picture-book scenes throughout the game." This storybook was known in-game as ''Rosalina's Storybook'', which told Rosalina's ...

Satellaview
The is a satellite modem peripheral produced by Nintendo for the Super Famicom in 1995. Containing 1 megabyte of ROM space and an additional 512 kB of RAM, Satellaview allowed players to download games, magazines, and other media through satellite broadcasts provided by Japanese company St.GIGA. Its heavy third-party support included Squaresoft, Taito, Konami, Capcom, and Seta. To use Satellaview, players purchased a special broadcast satellite (BS) tuner directly from St.GIGA or rented one for a six-month fee, and paid monthly subscription fees to both St.GIGA and Nintendo. It attaches to the expansion port on the bottom of the Super Famicom. Satellaview is the result of a collaboration between Nintendo and St.GIGA, the latter known in Japan for its "Tide of Sound" nature sound music. By 1994, St.GIGA was struggling financially due to the Japanese Recession affecting the demand for its music; Nintendo initiated a "rescue" plan by purchasing a stake in the company. Satellavie ...

Family Computer Disk System
The commonly shortened to the Famicom Disk System or just Disk System, is a peripheral for Nintendo's Family Computer home video game console, released only in Japan on February 21, 1986. It uses proprietary floppy disks called "Disk Cards" for cheaper data storage and it adds a new high-fidelity sound channel for supporting Disk System games. Fundamentally, the Disk System serves simply to enhance some aspects already inherent to the base Famicom system, with better sound and cheaper gamesthough with the disadvantages of high initial price, slow speed, and lower reliability. However, this boost to the market of affordable and writable mass storage temporarily served as an enabling technology for the creation of new types of video games. This includes the vast, open world, progress-saving adventures of the best-selling ''The Legend of Zelda'' (1986) and '' Metroid'' (1986), games with a cost-effective and swift release such as the best-selling ''Super Mario Bros. 2'', and nat ...

Famicom
The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is an 8-bit third-generation home video game console produced by Nintendo. It was first released in Japan in 1983 as the commonly known as the The NES, a redesigned version, was released in American test markets on October 18, 1985, before becoming widely available in North America and other countries. After developing a series of successful arcade games in the early 1980s, Nintendo planned to create a home video game console. Rejecting more complex proposals, the Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi called for a simple, cheap console that ran games stored on cartridges. The controller design was reused from Nintendo's portable Game & Watch games. Nintendo released several add-ons, such as a light gun for shooting games. The NES was one of the best-selling consoles of its time and helped revitalize the US game industry following the video game crash of 1983. It introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party devel ...

Inkling (Splatoon)
Inklings are a fictional species of anthropomorphic squid and are the primary playable characters in the ''Splatoon'' video game series by Nintendo. They have also made crossover playable appearances in other Nintendo games, such as ''Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'' and ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate''. Concept and design The player characters of ''Splatoon'' were originally anthropomorphic rabbits with the ability to burrow through floors, walls, and other solid surfaces they splattered with ink. This idea was worrisome to the designers, who felt that there was a mismatch between the characters' appearances and the ink-based gameplay. Designers came up with the idea for Inklings that were able to hide and swim in ink. The "missile-like" shape of their head was a good complement to the Inklings' movement according to the development team. When designing the Inklings the designers centered around it being female at first, which they stated was because there were not many other female leads in ...
