FIU Golden Panthers Men's Soccer
The FIU Panthers men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of Florida International University. As of the upcoming 2022 season, the team is a member of the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference (The American). History FIU started their soccer program in 1972. They were unaffiliated from any collegiate organization until they joined the NCAA Division II from 1975 to 1986. During this time, FIU went to 11 NCAA Division II Tournaments where they won the national championships in 1982 and 1984 and runners up in 1980 and 1985. Due to the success of their program in Division II, they became an NCAA Division I team in 1987. The team has represented FIU at 8 NCAA Division I Tournaments finishing runners up in 1996. NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship
The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship is the annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. It has been played annually since 1972; prior to then, all teams competed in a single class. The most successful program has been Southern Connecticut State, with six national titles. The current champion are Franklin Pierce, who won their first national title in 2022, defeating CSU Pueblo, 2–0, in the final. Format The Division II tournament is structured around four unbalanced Super Regionals from the eight NCAA regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast, and West). At least two and as many as six teams from each region are selected with no automatic qualifiers given. The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) is a collegiate athletic conference that has been affiliated with the NCAA's Division I since 1976. Originally a non-football conference, the Sun Belt began sponsoring football in 2001. Its football teams participate in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The 14 member institutions of the Sun Belt are distributed primarily across the southern United States. Jeff Cassar
Jeff Cassar (born February 2, 1974) is an American soccer coach and former goalkeeper who last coached Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. Playing career Cassar played college soccer at Florida International University, where he was roommates with Steve Ralston. Following his graduation, he was selected eighth overall in the 1996 MLS College Draft by the Dallas Burn. Although Cassar made the team, Mark Dodd took firm hold of the starting position, and Cassar only appeared in two games that season. After spending all of the 1997 season injured with a torn ACL, Cassar was selected tenth overall in the 1997 MLS Expansion Draft by the Miami Fusion. Cassar started much of the Fusion's inaugural season, appearing in twenty-one games, all starts, and compiling a GAA of 1.95. Steve Ralston
Steve Ralston (born June 14, 1974) is an American retired soccer player and manager who played as a midfielder. He spent most of his playing career in Major League Soccer with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, retiring in 2010 as the league's all-time career leader in assists (135), appearances (378), starts (372), and minutes played (33,143). He also held the U.S. record for professional appearances (412) in 2010. He served as assistant manager at several teams, including the Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes, including a brief stint as the interim head coach at the Earthquakes in 2018. Kevin Nylen (born August 14, 1981) is an American former soccer defender and current head coach of the Boston University Terriers men's soccer team. Playing career Nylen attended Saint Anselm College from 1999 to 2003. During this time he earned the school's Male Athlete of the Year honor, awarded annually to one student-athlete who best exemplifies the Saint Anselm spirit in leadership, scholarship and athletic achievements. Louis Scott Calabrese (born June 2, 1972) is an American former soccer goalkeeper who is currently the head men's soccer coach at University of Central Florida. Playing career Calabrese attended Bryant University from 1990 to 1995. During this time, he was a four-year letterman and earned All-Conference honors while playing goalkeeper for the Bulldogs. After graduating in 1995 with a B.A. in business administration, Calabrese played professionally for the Rhode Island Stingrays from 1995 to 1997 and for the South Carolina Shamrocks in 1998. Kenneth Scott "Kenny" Arena (born February 6, 1981) is an American former soccer defender who is currently an assistant coach for FC Cincinnati. Arena is the son of current New England Revolution and former United States coach Bruce Arena. Player Arena attended the University of Virginia, playing on the men's soccer team from 1999 to 2002. Arena played for the United States U-20 men's national soccer team at the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. On January 17, 2003, the MetroStars selected Arena in the fourth round (32nd overall) in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. He spent two seasons with the MetroStars before being traded to D.C. Munga Eketebi
Munga Eketebi is a Congolese American former soccer forward who is currently the head men's soccer coach at Broward College. Playing career Eketebi attended Florida International University from 1983 to 1986 and was a standout player for the Panthers. A prolific scorer as a collegian, Eketebi's 50 career goals still remain tied for the most in FIU history. Additionally, his 124 career points rank second and his 24 assists tie him for fifth among FIU's all-time scoring leaders. Karl Kremser
Karl Friedrich Kremser (born August 3, 1945) is a German American former football placekicker for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL) and retired college soccer coach from Florida International University. He played college soccer for the United States Military Academy and college football for the University of Tennessee. He was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 1969 NFL Draft. Early life Kremser was born in Salzwedel in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany shortly after the end of World War II to Reichsdeutsche parents born in Latvia. Bill Nuttall
Bill Nuttall (born March 10, 1948, in Norristown, Pennsylvania) is the owner of Golden Viking Sports, licensee for the soccer brand Diadora. He was a first team Junior College and first team NSCAA All-American soccer goalkeeper who spent at least three seasons in the American Soccer League and three seasons in the North American Soccer League. He was the 1970 first team All American goalkeeper, coached at both the collegiate and professional levels and was the general manager of the United States Soccer Federation teams from 1991 to 1994. Club career Nuttall grew up in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. He attended Davis & Elkins College, playing on the men's soccer team from 1967 to 1970.
