Garmisch Classic
Garmisch Classic is an alpine ski area in the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. Its maximum elevation is above sea level at Osterfelderkopf, with a vertical drop of . Other peaks of ski area are the Kreuzjoch at and Kreuzeck at . The area hosted the World Championships in 2011 and 1978, and alpine skiing debuted at the Winter Olympics here in 1936. Run only as a combined event in 1936, the downhill portion was run at Garmisch Classic and the slalom was run at Gudiberg, adjacent to the ski jumps (Große Olympiaschanze). Garmisch Classic is known for the classic Kandahar slope, descending from Kreuzjoch, where the speed events are held for the World Cup and World Championships. Jessica Lindell-Vikarby (born 7 February 1984) is a retired Swedish World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Huddinge, Stockholm County, she made her World Cup debut in October 2002, and has two World Cup victories and seven podiums. Lindell-Vikarby has competed in three Olympics and six World Championships. On 14 July 2015, she announced her retirement from alpine skiing. Carolina Verónica Ruiz Castillo (born 14 October 1981) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Spain. Born in Osorno, Chile, she represented Spain in four Winter Olympics and eight World Championships. Marie-Michèle Gagnon (born 25 April 1989) is a World Cup alpine ski racer from Canada. Born in Lévis, Quebec, she was a technical skier focused on slalom. However, since an injury at the start of 2017 season, she no longer competes in slalom and rarely in giant slalom, focusing on speed disciplines and combined. Career Gagnon joined the Canadian national team at the age of eighteen, although a leg fracture halted her progress at the start of her rookie season. She made her World Cup debut in December 2008 and has represented Canada at two Winter Olympics and six World Championships. Marion Rolland (born 17 October 1982) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from France. Racing career Born in Saint-Martin-d'Hères, Isère, she made her World Cup debut in January 2004 and attained her first top-10 in February 2009 in Bansko. She has two World Cup podium finishes, both at the finals at Schladming in March 2012. Leanne Smith (born May 28, 1987) is a World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States, and specializes in the speed events. Early life Born in North Conway, New Hampshire, Smith attended A. Crosby Kennett High School. She spent her skiing time on the local mountain, Cranmore, where the founder of the first skiing school in the United States, Hannes Schneider, arrived from Austria. Following Cranmore, she trained with the Mount Washington Valley Ski Team, coached by Kurt Simard. Elena Fanchini (30 April 1985 – 8 February 2023) was an Italian World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Val Camonica, she focused on the speed events of downhill and super-G. Her younger sisters Nadia and Sabrina also raced on the Italian team. Biography Fanchini won two World Cup races in downhill 9 years apart and won a silver medal at the 2005 world championships. She represented Italy at three Winter Olympics and six World Championships.
