FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 – Men's Downhill
The Men's Downhill competition at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011, 2011 World Championships was the fourth race of the championships, run under spring-like conditions on Saturday, February 12. At the start of the race at 11:00 am Central European Time, CET, the temperature was 3 C (37 F) at the starting gate (1690 m, 5544 ft) and 9 C (48 F) at the finish area (770 m, 2526 ft). Mostly in the shade, the north-facing slope of the Kandahar 2 course at Garmisch Classic had a vertical drop of 920 m (3018 ft). Fifty four athletes from 24 countries competed. Garmisch Classic
Garmisch Classic is an alpine ski area in the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. Its maximum elevation is above sea level at Osterfelderkopf, with a vertical drop of . Other peaks of ski area are the Kreuzjoch at and Kreuzeck at . The area hosted the World Championships in 2011 and 1978, and alpine skiing debuted at the Winter Olympics here in 1936. Run only as a combined event in 1936, the downhill portion was run at Garmisch Classic and the slalom was run at Gudiberg, adjacent to the ski jumps (Große Olympiaschanze). Garmisch Classic is known for the classic Kandahar slope, descending from Kreuzjoch, where the speed events are held for the World Cup and World Championships. Steven Nyman
Steven Nyman (born February 12, 1982) is a World Cup alpine ski racer on the U.S. Ski Team. Formerly a slalom skier, he is now a speed specialist, with a main focus on downhill. Born in Provo, Utah, Nyman raced at Sundance as a junior until making a move to Park City in 1999. He was a discretionary pick for the 2002 World Junior Championships in Tarvisio, Italy, where he won the slalom and finished second in the combined. His slalom gold qualified him to compete in the World Cup Finals in Flachau, Austria, and finished a surprising 15th in his World Cup debut. Hans Olsson (alpine Skier)
Hans Anders Olsson (born 27 August 1984, in Mora, Sweden) is a Swedish former alpine skier. He represented Sweden at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he came 12th in downhill. He also represented Sweden at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships. Olsson specialised in the speed disciplines of super-G and particularly downhill. Hans' brother Jon Olsson Delér, is an alpine ski racer and a freestyle skier who has won multiple Winter X Games medals. Hans took a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships, where he won the super-G. Jan Hudec
Jan Hudec Jr. (born August 19, 1981) is a Czech-Canadian alpine ski racer who previously represented Canada until 2016 and specializes in the speed events of downhill and super-G. Beset by injuries for several seasons, he returned to World Cup form in 2012 at age 30 and gained his second victory. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, Hudec won the bronze medal in the super-G at Rosa Khutor. It was the first Olympic medal for Canada in men's alpine skiing in 20 years. Travis Ganong (born July 14, 1988) is an American World Cup alpine ski racer and specializes in the speed events of downhill and super-G. Born and raised in Truckee, California, he competed for the U.S. at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and placed fifth in the downhill at Rosa Khutor, 0.41 seconds behind the winner. Ganong gained his first World Cup victory on December 2014 in a downhill in Santa Caterina, Italy. At his third World Championships in 2015 at Beaver Creek, Colorado, he won the silver medal in the downhill. Werner Heel
Werner Heel (born 23 March 1982) is an Italian former World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Meran, Heel grew up in St. Leonhard in Passeier and currently resides in Meran, where he works as a police officer. Heel began skiing at the age of four, and his main disciplines are downhill and super-G. In order to be competitive in super combined he also practices slalom. In 2004 he won the Italian championship in super-G at Caspoggio. His career has been slowed by several injuries. Ondřej Bank () (born 27 October 1980) is a Czech retired World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Zábřeh na Moravě, Bank began his international career in 1995 when he first competed at the Junior World Championship. His first World Cup race was in January 2001. Bank is a specialist in the combined event, and his two podiums came at Beaver Creek and Kitzbühel. His biggest achievement is fifth place in the Giant Slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Dominik Paris (born 14 April 1989) is an Italian alpine ski racer, who specializes in speed events of downhill and super-G. He was the world champion in super-G, as the gold medalist in 2019 at Åre, Sweden. Andrej "Jerry" Jerman, (born 30 September 1978), is a recently retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Slovenia. Born in Tržič, then in SFR Yugoslavia, Jerman specialized in the speed events of downhill and super G. He gained his first World Cup victory at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in February 2007 in a downhill, the first-ever for Slovenia. The next day he finished second, again in the downhill. Until then, his best World Cup result was fourth place in a downhill at Bormio, two months earlier. Jerman later gathered his second victory at Bormio, and finished his career with four World Cup podiums, all in downhill, and 27 top tens, with 18 in downhill.
