FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 were the 41st FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held 7–20 February in Germany at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. These were the second alpine world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which previously hosted in 1978. It also hosted the first Olympic alpine skiing competition, a combined event at the 1936 Winter Olympics. The FIS awarded the championships on 25 May 2006, in Vilamoura, Portugal. The runner-up was Schladming, Austria, which hosted the next championships in 2013. Prior to landing the 2011 event in 2006, Garmisch-Partenkirchen had unsuccessfully bid to host the world championships five times in the previous two decades. Most of the competitions took place on the Kandahar slopes of Garmisch Classic, one of the two skiing areas of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Nolan Kasper
Nolan Kasper (born March 27, 1989) is a World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. He competes in the technical events and specializes in the slalom. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Kasper began skiing at age three at Hidden Valley ski area in northern New Jersey, where his father was a ski instructor. Kasper is a graduate of the Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont and attends Dartmouth College in the off-season. Kasper made his World Cup debut in November 2009 and was named for the 2010 U.S. Olympic team shortly after; he placed 24th in the Olympic slalom at Whistler. Markus Vogel
Markus Vogel (born January 12, 1984) is a World Cup alpine ski racer from the Canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland, who specializes in the Slalom discipline. He made his World Cup debut in January 2008 in his home race at Adelboden where he skied out of the first run. A week later in the slalom in Wengen, Vogel managed to qualify for the second run in 29th place from a start number of 62, but was unable to finish the second run. He did not finish the first run of his other four races in 2008. In fact, it was over a year until Vogel picked up his first World Cup points with a 19th-place finish in Kitzbühel. The 2010 season was another disappointing one, with Vogel spending most of his time in FIS Races and European Cup level. Kilian Albrecht ( bg, Килиан Албрехт; born 13 April 1973 in Vorarlberg) is an Austrian former alpine skier who represented both Austria and Bulgaria. He competed for Austria at the 2002 Olympics and for Bulgaria at the 2010 Olympics. His best result was a 4th-place finish in the slalom in 2002, missing a medal by only .04 of a second. Adam Žampa (born 13 September 1990) is a Slovakian World Cup alpine ski racer. His best result so far is the 5th place in combined at the 2014 Winter Olympics. His brother is Andreas Žampa. Lars Elton Myhre (born 17 August 1984) is a retired Norwegian alpine skier. He primarily competed in slalom and combined events. Myhre took a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2004, and made his World Cup debut the same year. He participated in slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Fritz Dopfer (; born 24 August 1987) is a German former World Cup alpine ski racer, specializing in the technical events of giant slalom and slalom. Born in Innsbruck, Austria, to a German father and an Austrian mother, the family lived in both countries during his youth. They lived in Schongau, Bavaria, in Germany until Dopfer was age 10, when the family moved to Tyrol in Austria. Dopfer raced for Austria through April 2007, then joined the German team that summer and made his World Cup debut in October 2007. During his first three seasons on the German team, he raced primarily on the European Cup circuit, with several World Cup starts per season, but no results. He moved up to the World Cup team for the 2011 season, and attained his first World Cup podium (and first top ten) in December 2011 in a giant slalom at Beaver Creek, Colorado. Theodore Sharp Ligety (born August 31, 1984) is a retired American alpine ski racer, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and an entrepreneur, having cofounded Shred Optics. Ligety won the combined event at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and the giant slalom race at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. He is also a five-time World Cup champion in giant slalom (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014). Ligety won the gold medal in the giant slalom at the 2011 World Championships. He successfully defended his world title in giant slalom in 2013 in Schladming, Austria, where he also won an unexpected gold medal in the super-G and a third gold medal in the super combined.
