FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2007
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2007 were the 39th FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held 2–18 February in Åre, Sweden. Åre previously hosted the world championships in 1954, and often hosts late season World Cup events. The FIS awarded the 2007 event in 2002; other finalists were Lillehammer, Norway, and Val-d'Isère, France, which was later selected to host the 2009 championships. These were the first world championships to use the "super-combined" format (one run each of downhill and slalom) for the combined event. First run on the World Cup circuit in 2005 at Wengen, the "super-combi" format (SC) made its debut at the Winter Olympics in 2010. The traditional combined format (K) consists of one downhill run and ''two'' slalom runs. Patrik Järbyn
Patrik Järbyn (born 16 April 1969 in Målsryd, Sweden) is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer. Despite never having won a World Cup race, Järbyn has two individual World Championship medals. At the 1996 World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, he won the silver medal in super-G. In 2007 at Åre, Sweden, he won the bronze medal in the downhill to become the oldest medalist ever at a World Championships. On 19 December 2008, Järbyn finished third in a super-G at Val Gardena, Italy, and set a new record as the oldest man to score a podium finish in a World Cup alpine race, at the age of 39 years and 9 months. Järbyn broke his own record, set with a third-place finish in the super-G at Lake Louise in November 2006 at the age of 37 years and 8 months. John Kucera
John Kucera (born September 17, 1984) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he raced in all five alpine disciplines, focusing on the speed events of downhill and super-G. Kucera is a former world champion in the downhill. His parents immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1980. Kucera made his World Cup debut at age 20 in November 2004, on home snow in Lake Louise, Alberta. Two years later, Lake Louise was the site of his first World Cup victory, a super-G race in November 2006. Three weeks later he made another World Cup podium with a third-place finish in the super-G at Val Gardena, Italy. His next podium came two years later, a second place in the super-G at Lake Louise. Matts Olsson (born 1 December 1988) is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer who raced in the giant slalom discipline. Born in Karlstad, Olsson made his World Cup debut at age 19 in October 2007. Werner Heel
Werner Heel (born 23 March 1982) is an Italian former World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Meran, Heel grew up in St. Leonhard in Passeier and currently resides in Meran, where he works as a police officer. Heel began skiing at the age of four, and his main disciplines are downhill and super-G. In order to be competitive in super combined he also practices slalom. In 2004 he won the Italian championship in super-G at Caspoggio. His career has been slowed by several injuries. Samuel Bode Miller ( ; born October 12, 1977) is an American former World Cup alpine ski racer. He is an Olympic and World Championship gold medalist, a two-time overall World Cup champion in 2005 and 2008, and the most successful male American alpine ski racer of all time. Andrej "Jerry" Jerman, (born 30 September 1978), is a recently retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Slovenia. Born in Tržič, then in SFR Yugoslavia, Jerman specialized in the speed events of downhill and super G. He gained his first World Cup victory at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in February 2007 in a downhill, the first-ever for Slovenia. The next day he finished second, again in the downhill. Until then, his best World Cup result was fourth place in a downhill at Bormio, two months earlier. Hans Anders Olsson (born 27 August 1984, in Mora, Sweden) is a Swedish former alpine skier. He represented Sweden at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he came 12th in downhill. He also represented Sweden at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships. Olsson specialised in the speed disciplines of super-G and particularly downhill.
