FIBA–EuroLeague Dispute
The 2015–17 FIBA–EuroLeague Basketball controversy was a dispute between FIBA and Euroleague Basketball over control of the premier Europe-wide professional club basketball competition. Background The EuroLeague was originally established by FIBA Europe, and it operated under its umbrella from 1958 until summer 2000, concluding with the 1999–00 season. That was when the richest and most popular European basketball clubs created Euroleague Basketball. FIBA had never trademarked the "EuroLeague" name, even though it had used that name for the competition since the mid-nineties. The leading European clubs therefore used the Euroleague name for their new competition which started in 2000. FIBA responded by launching their new Suproleague competition. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA ; French: ) is an association of national organizations which governs the sport of basketball worldwide. Originally known as the (hence FIBA), in 1989 it dropped the word ''amateur'' from its name but retained the acronym. The Croatian Basketball Federation ( hr, Hrvatski košarkaški savez) is a non-profit organization and the national sports governing body of basketball in Croatia. It was founded on 19 December 1948 as a member of the larger Basketball Federation of Yugoslavia. On 19 January 1992, the HKS joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Basketball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (''Košarkaški savez Bosne i Hercegovine'' / Кошаркашки савез Босне и Херцеговине) is the highest basketball governing body in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It organizes the Bosnian basketball championship, the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team, for men and women, senior and youth categories. History Basketball came to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1929. The Basketball Federation was founded on April 3, 1950 as a part of the Yugoslav Federation. EuroBasket 2017
EuroBasket 2017 was the 40th edition of the EuroBasket championship that was organized by FIBA Europe and held between 31 August and 17 September 2017. Beginning from 2017, the continental championships take place every four years with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Like the previous edition, the tournament was co-hosted by four countries. Games in the group stage were held in Turkey, Finland, Israel and Romania. The knock-out phase was played in Istanbul, Turkey. Slovenia won their first-ever tournament after defeating Serbia 93–85 in the final. Spain won the bronze medal by beating Russia with the same result. VTB United League (russian: Единая Лига ВТБ) is an international professional men's club basketball list of basketball leagues, league that was founded in 2008. It is made up of mostly Russian clubs, along with one each from Belarus and Kazakhstan. Since VTB United League 2013–14, 2013, it is the Russian basketball league system, first tier of Russian professional club basketball. Therefore, the highest placed Russian team in the league is also named list of Russian basketball champions, Russian national champions. The league is sponsored by Russian state-owned VTB Bank. The ABA League, renamed to the ABA League First Division in 2017, is the 1st-tier regional men's professional basketball league that originally featured clubs from the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia). Due to sponsorship reasons, the league was also known as the Goodyear League from 2001 to 2006, the NLB League from 2006 to 2011, and as the AdmiralBet ABA League from 2021.
