F.R.A.S. (weapon)
Fuel Research Aluminium Stearate (FRAS), is mixture of chemical substances, used as an incendiary agent by the United Kingdom during the Second World War. It is hygroscopic fuel, composed of "aluminium stearate", petrol, and peptized by xylenol, developed by the Fuel Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. In the conflict in Europe, it was the fuel of the M1A1 flamethrower.McKinney 1949. Delivered ready to use. It was used as fuel for individual flamethrowers, for the Churchill Crocodile flamethrower tank (standard fuel), and was studied as a precursor in the 5B incendiary paste used in the flame-fougasse. Syneresis (also spelled 'synæresis' or 'synaeresis'), in chemistry, is the extraction or expulsion of a liquid from a gel, such as when serum drains from a contracting clot of blood. Another example of syneresis is the collection of whey on the surface of yogurt. Syneresis can also be observed when the amount of diluent in a swollen polymer exceeds the solubility limit as the temperature changes. A household example of this is the counterintuitive expulsion of water from dry gelatin when the temperature increases. Incendiary weapons, incendiary devices, incendiary munitions, or incendiary bombs are weapons designed to start fires or destroy sensitive equipment using fire (and sometimes used as anti-personnel weaponry), that use materials such as napalm, thermite, magnesium powder, chlorine trifluoride, or white phosphorus. The Ministry of Supply (MoS) was a department of the UK government formed in 1939 to co-ordinate the supply of equipment to all three British armed forces, headed by the Minister of Supply.
