Ezra Collective
Ezra Collective is a British jazz quintet composed of drummer and bandleader Femi Koleoso, bassist TJ Koleoso, keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi, and tenor saxophonist James Mollison. The group fuses elements of afro-beat, hip-hop and soul, and frequently collaborates with fellow London-based jazz musicians such as Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd. The members of Ezra met at the jazz programme ''Tomorrow's Warriors'', run by Gary Crosby. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Joe Armon-Jones
Joseph Armon-Jones (born February 1993) is a British musician, keyboardist, composer, producer and bandleader. His debut album, ''Starting Today'', was released in May 2018 and his second album, ''Turn To Clear View'', was released in September 2019. ''Time'' magazine listed the 2019 release as one of the top 10 albums of the year. Aside from his solo work, he is a member of Ezra Collective and Nubya Garcia's band. Background Joe Armon-Jones was born in Oxfordshire to musician parents, his mother being a singer and his father a jazz pianist. He attended the workshops of Tomorrow's Warriors under the direction of bass player Gary Crosby, where he met and became a founding member of the group Ezra Collective. Nubya Garcia
Nubya Nyasha Garcia (born 1991) is an English jazz musician, saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Early life and education Garcia was born in 1991 in Camden Town, London, the youngest of four siblings, to a Guyanese mother, a former civil servant, and a British Trinidadian filmmaker father. Garcia followed her three older siblings to the local Camden Saturday Music Centre at the age of 5, where she first learned the violin and later played the viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO). Garcia's upbringing by her stepdad, a brass player, and music loving mother, coupled with the music activities at Camden School for Girls, meant she was exposed to multiple genres of music. Garcia began learning the saxophone at the age of 10, with Vicky Wright. She became a member of the Camden Jazz Band, directed by jazz pianist Nikki Yeoh, before joining the junior jazz program at the Royal Academy of Music. Moses Boyd
Moses Boyd (born 30 April 1991) is a British jazz drummer, composer, record producer, bandleader and radio host. His debut solo studio album ''Dark Matter'' (2020) was nominated for the 2020 Mercury Prize. In 2014, Boyd and saxophonist Binker Golding formed the duo Binker & Moses and released three consecutive albums, with accolades including one MOBO Award, two Jazz FM Awards and a Parliamentary Jazz Award. In 2022, Binker & Moses released their fourth album, ''Feeding the Machine'', to critical acclaim. Boyd's self-titled jazz band Moses Boyd Exodus (also known as the Exodus) released several mixtapes in the mid-2010s and together have recorded most of Boyd's solo releases. Gary Crosby (bassist)
Gary Crosby (born 26 January 1955) is a British jazz double bassist, composer, music arranger, and educator. He was a founding member of the celebrated group the Jazz Warriors in the 1980s and has worked with many top international artists. Also a bandleader, record producer, company director and facilitator, he leads Gary Crosby's Nu Troop, Jazz Jamaica, Jazz Jamaica All Stars and is the founder of Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Crosby is Co-founder and Artistic Director of Tomorrow's Warriors, a talent development organisation and charity co-founded in 1991 with his partner Janine Irons. In 1996 Crosby and Irons established Dune Music, a company that encompasses artist management, a record label, music publishing, and education.
