Eyeo Festival
The Eyeo Festival is a yearly conference for artists who work with data and code. It takes place in Minneapolis. The conference began in 2011, and has taken place yearly since then, typically at the Walker Art Center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was put on pause for 2020 and 2021. Organizers and speakers The event is organized by Dave Schroeder, Jer Thorp, Caitlin Rae Hargarten, and Wes Grubs. The conference features speakers who work in data visualization, creative coders and hackers. Varsity Theater (Minneapolis)
Dinkytown is a commercial district within the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Centered at 14th Avenue Southeast and 4th Street Southeast, the district contains several city blocks occupied by various small businesses, restaurants, bars, and apartment buildings that house mostly University of Minnesota students. Dinkytown is along the North side of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities East Bank campus. Nadieh Bremer
Nadieh Bremer is a data scientist and data visualization designer. She is based out of a small town outside of Amsterdam. Education Bremer graduated cum laude from Leiden University with Masters of Science in Astronomy. She also attended University of California, Berkeley. Career Early in her career, Bremer worked as a Senior Consultant of Advanced Analytics and Data Visualizations at Deloitte. She is currently a freelance data designer under the name "Visual Cinnamon," working with small startups to provide custom visualizations of their data. Catherine D'Ignazio
Catherine D'Ignazio (also known as kanarinka) is an American professor, artist, and software developer who focuses on feminism and data literacy. She is the director of the Data + Feminism lab at MIT. D'Ignazio is best known for her hackathons, such as "Make the Breast Pump Not Suck", and for her book ''Data Feminism'', co-authored with Lauren Klein. Early life and education D'Ignazio was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and grew up in North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, and Michigan. Meredith Whittaker
Meredith Whittaker is the president of the Signal Foundation and serves on their board of directors. She was formerly the Minderoo Research Professor at New York University (NYU), and the co-founder and faculty director of the AI Now Institute. She also served as a senior advisor on AI to Chair Lina Khan at the Federal Trade Commission. Whittaker was employed at Google for 13 years, where she founded Google's Open Research group and co-founded the M-Lab. Everest Pipkin
Everest Pipkin is a drawing, game, and software artist from Central Texas, who produces intimate work with large data sets. Early life Pipkin's parents worked with a nonprofit organization called The Nobelity Project, and they began their artistic career as a young teen taking photographs for the organization's work. Pipkin graduated from Westlake High School in 2008, studied on a Young Masters grant at the Art Academy of San Francisco and Paris American Academy and finished by receiving a BFA at the University of Texas and an MFA Carnegie Mellon University. Golan Levin
Golan ( he, גּוֹלָן ''Gōlān''; ar, جولان ' or ') is the name of a biblical town later known from the works of Josephus (first century CE) and Eusebius (''Onomasticon'', early 4th century CE). Archaeologists localize the biblical city of Golan at Sahm el-Jaulān, a Syrian village east of Wadi ar-Ruqqad in the Daraa Governorate, where early Byzantine ruins were found. Zachary Lieberman
Zachary Lieberman is an American new media artist, designer, computer programmer, and educator. Early life and education Born in 1977, Lieberman holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Hunter College and both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design. Work Lieberman's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions around the world, including Ars Electronica, Futuresonic, CeBIT, and the Off Festival. Samuel Sinyangwe
Samuel Sinyangwe (born May 12, 1990) is an American policy analyst and racial justice activist. Sinyangwe is a member of the Movement for Black Lives, the founder of Mapping Police Violence, a database of police killings in the United States and the Police Scorecard, a website with data on police use of force and accountability metrics on US police and sheriff's departments. Kyle McDonald
Kyle McDonald is a media artist. McDonald creates visually appealing models using code, and releases tool kits for other artists to customize their own art as they see fit. McDonald was recently an adjunct professor at New York University Tisch School of the Arts' ITP. He is a member of F.A.T lab (Free Art and Technology Lab), and a community manager for OpenFrameworks. He was a resident at STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University. Work/Research Kyle McDonald worked on certifying AI images. He identified fakes called "generative adversarial networks"(GANs). They essentially take data into a neural network, and it is "trained" to produce the best possible image. Lauren McCarthy
Lauren McCarthy is a Chinese-American artist and computer programmer based in Los Angeles. McCarthy creates artworks that use a variety of media and techniques, including performance, artificial intelligence and programmed computer-based interaction. She created p5.js, an open-source and web-based version of the software Processing (programming language), Processing. Education McCarthy graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science, BS in Computer science, Computer Science and a BS in Art and Design. Jenny Odell is an American multidisciplinary artist, writer, and educator based in Oakland, California. She has taught Internet art and digital/physical design at Stanford University since 2013.
