Sam Taylor (director)
Sam Taylor (August 13, 1895 – March 6, 1958) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer, most active in the silent film era. Taylor is best known for his comedic directorial work with Harold Lloyd and Mary Pickford, and also later worked with Laurel and Hardy. He was born in New York City. A notorious cinematic legend over the decades has suggested that Taylor's 1929 adaptation of Shakespeare's ''The Taming of the Shrew'' had the screen credit "additional dialogue by Sam Taylor". However, no extant prints of the film contain this credit, and there is no documentary evidence that it ever existed. Taylor directed seven feature films with Lloyd as star, second only to Fred C. Newmeyer (the two co-directed Lloyd in five features). He also directed Pickford in her first "talkie" feature with ''Coquette'' (1929), which garnered the latter an Academy Award. Louise Lorraine (born Louise Escovar; October 1, 1904 – February 2, 1981) was an American actress. Life and career Louise Lorraine was born Louise Escovar in San Francisco, California. One day, a photography salesman knocked on the door of the Los Angeles home where Lorraine lived with her widowed mother and five siblings. The door was answered by Lorraine. The salesman was so taken aback by her looks and demeanor that he told her mother she should be in films, then silent films and he happened to have a contact with Ince Studio. Initially, Lorraine's mother refused, but eventually she gave in. Lorraine began working in films as an extra and "a bathing girl" before she gained leading roles in comedies for independent studios. Bert Woodruff
William Herbert "Bert" Woodruff (April 29, 1856 – June 14, 1934) was an American actor of the silent era. Woodruff was born in Peoria, Illinois, and was the son of Mrs. Hannah Woodruff. He performed on stage before he began acting on film, debuting in 1876 as part of the Woodruff and West song-and-dance act. His performances included blackface comedy and Irish specialties. In 1882, he became part of the Adelphi Theater stock company in Peoria, where he worked for seven years. In 1898, Woodruff moved into management, opening a vaudeville theater in Peoria and managing it until 1904. From there he went to Redondo Beach, California, where he opened the city's first theater for films. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1916 and 1931. Gus "Pop" Leonard (February 4, 1859 – March 27, 1939) was an American film actor. Biography The French-born actor began his long career on the stage in San Francisco, California, while he was still a child in the 1860s. In later years, he specialised in a drunken waiter act in vaudeville. Leonard started his film career in 1915 and mostly played supporting roles in slapstick comedies. He appeared in nearly 190 films between 1916 and 1937. He appeared in the '' Our Gang'' comedies: '' Mush and Milk'', '' Teacher's Beau'' and '' The Lucky Corner''. William Gillespie (24 January 1894 – 23 June 1938) was a Scottish actor. Biography Gillespie started in Hollywood films from the silent era. He played in about 180 films between 1915 and 1939, although his appearances were often uncredited. Gillespie frequently appeared in Hal Roach comedies from 1917, usually as stuffy official or manager.
