Exhibition Of The Centenary Of The Opening Of The Ports Of Brazil
The national commemorative Exhibition of the centenary of the opening of the Ports of Brazil, also known as Brazilian National Exposition of 1908 or the National Exposition of Brazil at Rio de Janeiro, marked a hundred years since the opening of the Brazilian ports acelebrated Brazil's trade and development. It opened in Urca, Rio de Janeiro on 11 August, stayed open for 3 months and received over 1 million visitors. Location The 41 person executive committee considered several locations in Rio de Janeiro, before selecting a 182,000 m² site between Praia da Saudade and Praia Vermelha in Urca. Opening The fair was opened (a month later than planned) by president Afonso Pena. The main entrance was through a hundred foot high illuminated gateway designed by René Barba. The Earth Sciences Museum (''Museu de Ciências da Terra'') is a geological museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The building was part of the National Exposition of Brazil in 1908. José Rodrigues Nunes
José Rodrigues Nunes (11 April 1800, Salvador, Bahia - 27 November 1881, Salvador, Bahia) was a Brazilian artist who worked primarily in Salvador, Bahia. He was primarily a painter, but also worked in the fields of decoration, restoration, and set design. He was a student of Franco Velasco (1780-1833) and is the final painter of the Bahian School of Painting ( pt, Escola Baiana de Pintura). Nunes taught drawing at Liceu Provincial de Salvador between 1837 and 1859. His students included Olímpio Pereira da Mata, Macário José da Rocha, João Francisco Lopes Rodrigues (1825-1893), Francisco da Silva Romão, and his son, Francisco Rodrigues Nunes. ''Victoria amazonica'' is a species of flowering plant, the second largest of the water lily family Nymphaeaceae. It is the national flower of Guyana. Its native regions are Guyana and tropical South America. Description The ''Victoria amazonica'' has very large leaves, up to in diameter, that float on the water's surface on a submerged stalk, in length, rivaling that of the green anaconda, a snake local to its habitat. It is the second-largest waterlily in the world. ''V. amazonica'' is native to the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin, such as oxbow lakes and bayous. Rio De Janeiro Botanical Garden
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden or Jardim Botânico is located at the Jardim Botânico district in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The Botanical Garden shows the diversity of Brazilian and foreign flora. There are around 6,500 species (some endangered) distributed throughout an area of as well as numerous greenhouses. The garden also houses monuments of historical, artistic, and archaeological significance. There is an important research center, which includes the most complete library in the country specializing in botany with over 32,000 volumes. It was founded in 1808 by King John VI of Portugal. Benedito Calixto de Jesus (14 October 1853 – 31 May 1927) was a Brazilian Painting, painter. His works usually depicted figures from Brazil and Brazilian culture, including a famous portrait of the ''bandeirante'' Domingos Jorge Velho in 1923, and scenes from the coastline of São Paulo. Unlike many artists of the time, Calixto's patron was an individual other than the state, who were "the most dependable source of patronage." Jerónimos Monastery
The Jerónimos Monastery or Hieronymites Monastery ( pt, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, ) is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal. It became the necropolis of the Portuguese royal dynasty of Aviz in the 16th century but was secularized on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa. Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo (8 December 1851 — 13 June 1928) was a Brazilian architect, known for designing various buildings and landmarks in São Paulo, such as the Teatro Municipal, the Mercado Municipal and the Pinacoteca.
