Excel High School (Alabama)
Excel High School is a public high school in Excel, Alabama. Panthers are the school mascot and black and gold the school colors. It has about 310 students. The school is located in a rural area and the largest ever graduating class was 79 students. In 1999 it was made a targeted assistance school and provided additional funding resources for additional instructional staff. In 2020 the student body was about 70 percent white and a quarter African American. History J. J. Benford was the principal in 1924. Alumni Lee Roy Jordan who played football at the University of Alabama as part of Bear Bryant's second recruiting class and in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and coach Tom Landry is an alum. Excel, Alabama
Excel is a town in Monroe County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 557. The current mayor is Jenny Countryman. Excel is the birthplace of former University of Alabama and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Lee Roy Jordan. Excel High School (3A) provides education for children in and around the town of Excel. Businesses within the town include Dollar General, post office, a "do-it-yourself" car wash, a laundromat, hardware store, a locally-run diner and one bank. Excel incorporated in February 1948. Lee Roy Jordan
Lee Roy Jordan (born April 27, 1941) is a former American football linebacker. After attending the University of Alabama, playing under head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, he played 14 years in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys from 1963 to 1976. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. Early years Born and raised in Excel, Alabama, Jordan was the fifth of seven children of Walter Sr. and Cleo Jordan. He has three older brothers Walter Jr., Carl and Bennie Ray and three sisters Lottie, Agnes and Darlene (who died at age 2 of leukemia). Paul William "Bear" Bryant (September 11, 1913 – January 26, 1983) was an American college football player and coach. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and best known as the head coach of the University of Alabama football team. Thomas Wade Landry (September 11, 1924 – February 12, 2000) was an American professional football player and coach. He was the first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL), a position he held for 29 seasons. During his coaching career, he created many new formations and methods, such as the now popular 4–3 defense, and the "flex defense" system made famous by the "Doomsday Defense" squads he built during his tenure with the Cowboys.
