Evert Sparks
Evert Ellsworth Sparks (September 10, 1879 – May 11, 1972) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1930 as a member of the United Farmers caucus in government. Political career Sparks first ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1921 general election, as a United Farmers candidate in a two-way race against Liberal incumbent Hugh John Montgomery in the electoral district of Wetaskiwin. He won by a comfortable margin to pick up the district for his party. In the 1926 Alberta general election, Sparks faced Montgomery again and defeated him on the second count. Hugh John Montgomery
Hugh John Montgomery (July 31, 1876 – August 30, 1956) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a politician on the municipal and provincial levels of government in Alberta. He served on the city council of Wetaskiwin in various posts between 1906 and 1929. He also served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1914 to 1921 and again from 1930 to 1935 as a member of the Liberal Party in both government and opposition. Early life Hugh John Montgomery was born in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island on July 31, 1878. He grew up on the island and attended Charlottetown Business College He moved west in 1898 after graduating and settled in Wetaskiwin when it was still in the Northwest Territories. The 1921 Alberta general election was held on July 18, 1921, to elect members to the 5th Alberta Legislative Assembly. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. The Liberal Party, which had governed the province since its creation in 1905, led by Charles Stewart at the time of the election, was defeated by a very-new United Farmers of Alberta political party. The UFA was an agricultural lobby organization that was contesting its first general election. It had previously elected one MLA in a by-election. Under the Block Voting system, each voter in Edmonton and Calgary could vote for up to five candidates, while Medicine Hat voters could vote for up to two candidates. The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats.
