Evert Bancker (mayor)
Evert Bancker (January 24, 1665 in Albany, New York – July 1734 in Guilderland, New York) was an American trader and politician who was Mayor of Albany from 1695 to 1696 and from 1707 to 1709. Early life He was the only surviving son of Gerrit Bancker (1635–1691), a pioneer fur trader, and Lysbet "Elizabeth" Van Epps (1630–1691), a trader's daughter with ties to the Mohawk Valley. His younger sister, Anna Bancker (1670–1740), married Johannes de Peyster, the Mayor of New York City. His father died in 1691, and he was named co-executor of the estate. Upon the death of his mother in 1693, he inherited a substantial family estate that included holdings in Albany and New York. He was among a number of Albany natives who maintained dual residency - being admitted to the "Freedom" of New York City in 1697. From its formal chartering on 22 July 1686 until 1779, the mayors of Albany, New York, were appointed by the royal governor of New York (state), New York, per the provisions of the original city charter, issued by Governor Thomas Dongan. Commissioners For Indian Affairs
The Commissioners for Indian Affairs were a group of officials of colonial Albany, New York charged with regulating the fur trade and dealing with the Iroquois. History Originally the local magistrates, functioning informally, performed these tasks as part of their official duties. In 1685, Governor Andros organized a board of commissioners, the same officials who had previously performed those duties. This system was affirmed by charter granted to the City of Albany by Governor Thomas Dongan in 1686. In 1696, Governor Benjamin Fletcher appointed an independent board of four members to take over from the magistrates: Pieter Schuyler, Dirck Wesselse Ten Broeck, Domine Godfrey Dellius, and Evert Bancker. The history of Albany, New York began long before the first interaction of Europeans with the native Indian tribes, as they had long inhabited the area. The area was originally inhabited by an Algonquian Indian tribe, the Mohican, as well as the Iroquois, five nations of whom the easternmost, the Mohawk, had the closest relations with traders and settlers in Albany. Henry Hudson first claimed this area for the Dutch in 1609. Fur traders established the first European settlement in 1614; Albany was officially chartered as a city in 1686. It succeeded Poughkeepsie as the capital of New York in 1797. It is one of the oldest surviving settlements from the original thirteen colonies, and the longest continuously chartered city in the United States. Adrian Bancker
Adrian Bancker (1703 – August 21, 1772), also known as Adriaan or Adrianus Bancker, was a prominent silversmith in New York City. Bancker was the son of Evert Bancker, third mayor of Albany, New York, and baptized on October 10, 1703 in Albany. He was apprenticed to Henricus Boelen circa 1718 and made a freeman in 1731. In January of either 1728 or 1729 he married Gertrude Elizabeth Van Taerling, the daughter of Jan van Taerling, a former governor of Curaçao. He was a New York City alderman during the 1730s and 40s, a deacon in the Dutch Church, Commissioner of Fortifications in New York in 1755 and 1756, and from 1733 to 1766 was collector of the South Ward. In 1766 he advertised as being on Bridge Street, near the Exchange. He died in Albany on August 21, 1772.
