Col. Everett Marion Yon, Sr. (January 13, 1895 – November 25, 1965) was a decorated United States Army, U.S. Army officer, athlete, coach and athletics administrator. Yon was director of athletics at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, Gainesville from 1925–28. Yon played for the Florida Gators football team in 1914 Florida Gators football team, 1914 and 1915 Florida Gators football team, 1915, and the Gators baseball team in 1915 and 1916. His career was cut short when he was called by the National Guard to defend the Mexican border in the Battle of Columbus (1916), Battle of Columbus in the spring of 1916. He graduated a few months later before serving in the first World War. He then attended the United States Army Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia, before returning to Gainesville in 1923 as a football coach and an ROTC instructor. Blountstown, Florida
Blountstown is a city in Calhoun County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,514 at the 2010 census, which represented an increase from 2,444 in 2000. It is the county seat of Calhoun County. Name Blountstown is named for John Blount, a Creek Indian chief who served as a guide for General Andrew Jackson during his invasion of Spanish Florida in 1818. This invasion was not directed at Spain, per se, but at Seminole Indians who would attack settlements north of Florida, then retreat to relative safety below the border of Spanish Florida. Also, Spain did not return escaped slaves to the U.S. In any case, this invasion caused Spain to sell Florida to the United States, since it was apparent that Spain would have a hard time defending against invasion. Thus, this territory became a part of the U.S. in 1821.
