1993 Everest Air Dornier 228 Crash
On 31 July 1993, a Dornier 228 passenger turboprop operated by Nepalese airline Everest Air crashed in Tanahun District near Chule Ghopte hill, Nepal. The crash killed all of the 19 passengers and crew on board. Aircraft The aircraft involved was a Dornier 228 bearing the registration ''9N-ACL''. It was built by Dornier Flugzeugwerke in 1984 and was operated by several German airlines and later in the Marshall Islands before being purchased by Everest Air in 1992. Incident The aircraft was flying from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport. There were sixteen passengers, two pilots and a flight attendant on board. The Dornier 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL utility aircraft, designed and first manufactured by Dornier GmbH (later DASA Dornier, Fairchild-Dornier) from 1981 until 1998. Two hundred and forty-five were built in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. In 1983, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) bought a production licence and manufactured another 125 aircraft in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. In July 2017, 63 aircraft were still in airline service. In 2009, RUAG started building a Dornier 228 New Generation in Germany. The fuselage, wings and tail unit are manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kanpur, India, and transported to Oberpfaffenhofen, where RUAG Aviation carries out aircraft final assembly. Ramechhap Airport is a domestic airport serving the municipality of Manthali, the district headquarters of Ramechhap District located in the Tamakoshi River valley in Bagmati Province in Nepal. As of October 2022, most flights to Lukla Airport are operated from Ramechhap Airport. Manthali is a municipality and the headquarters of Ramechhap District in Bagmati Province, Nepal that was established on 2 December 2014 by merging the former village development committees Old-Manthali, Bhatauli, Chisapani, Kathjor, Bhaluwajor, Salupati and Sunarpani. It was declared the headquarters of the district on 9 March 1989 (26 Falgun 2045 BS). It lies on the bank of the Tamakoshi River. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 45,416 people living in 10,099 individual households. Pokhara Airport is a domestic airport serving Pokhara in Nepal. Following a new agreement on air travel between India and Nepal, Pokhara Airport will be replaced by Nepal's third international airport, Pokhara International Airport in 2023.
