Evening Standard Theatre Awards
The ''Evening Standard'' Theatre Awards, established in 1955, are the oldest theatrical awards ceremony in the United Kingdom. They are presented annually for outstanding achievements in London Theatre, and are organised by the ''Evening Standard'' newspaper. They are the West End's equivalent to Broadway's Drama Desk Awards. Trophies The trophies take the form of a modelled statuette, a figure representing Drama, designed by Frank Dobson RA, a former Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art. Categories Three of the awards are given in the names of former ''Evening Standard'' notables: *Arts editor Sydney Edwards (who conceived the awards, and died suddenly in July 1979) for the Best Director category. *Editor Charles Wintour (who as deputy-editor in 1955, launched the awards after a nod from the proprietor, Lord Beaverbrook') for Most Promising Playwright. *Long-serving theatre critic Milton Shulman (for several years a key member of the judging panel) for the Ou ...

Evening Standard
The ''Evening Standard'', formerly ''The Standard'' (1827–1904), also known as the ''London Evening Standard'', is a local free daily newspaper in London, England, published Monday to Friday in tabloid format. In October 2009, after being purchased by Russian businessman Alexander Lebedev, the paper ended a 180-year history of paid circulation and became a free newspaper, doubling its circulation as part of a change in its business plan. Emily Sheffield became editor in July 2020 but resigned in October 2021. History From 1827 to 2009 The newspaper was founded by barrister Stanley Lees Giffard on 21 May 1827 as ''The Standard''. The early owner of the paper was Charles Baldwin. Under the ownership of James Johnstone, ''The Standard'' became a morning paper from 29 June 1857. Vere Harmsworth, 3rd Viscount Rothermere
Vere Harold Esmond Harmsworth, 3rd Viscount Rothermere (27 April 1925 – 1 September 1998), known as Vere Harmsworth until 1978, was a British newspaper magnate. He controlled large media interests in the United Kingdom and United States. Business life Rothermere became the Chairman of Associated Newspapers in 1970, taking over from his father Esmond Cecil Harmsworth, 2nd Viscount Rothermere, who had Alzheimer's disease. He was responsible for the relaunch of the ''Daily Mail'' as a tabloid, after which its circulation increased greatly under editor Sir David English. He may also be considered the founder of ''The Mail on Sunday''. After the death of his father in 1978, he also became chairman of parent company Daily Mail and General Trust plc (DMGT). He attempted to combine the companies in a manner calculated to avoid taxation. The 64th ''Evening Standard'' Theatre Awards were awarded in recognition of the 2017–18 London Theatre season on 18 November 2018 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The 61st ''Evening Standard'' Theatre Awards were awarded on Sunday 22 November 2015 at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Nominations were announced on 2 November 2015. The ceremony was presented by Rob Brydon and co-hosted by ''Evening Standard'' owner Evgeny Lebedev, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. Non-competitive awards The Lebedev award went to American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. The Editor’s award, awarded in partnership with The Ivy, went to Vanessa Redgrave. The Victoria and Albert Museum, V&A’s exhibition Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty won the Beyond Theatre award. Royal Opera House
The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history. In 1734, the first ballet was presented. A year later, the first season of operas, by George Frideric Handel, began. Many of his operas and oratorios were specifically written for Covent Garden and had their premieres there. The current building is the third theatre on the site, following disastrous fires in 1808 and 1856 to previous buildings.
