Evelyn Procter
Evelyn Emma Stefanos Procter, FRHistS (6 June 1897 – 22 March 1980) was a British historian and academic. She served as principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford, from 1946 to 1962. Early life Procter was born on 6 June 1897 in Hunton Bridge, Hertfordshire. She was educated at two all girls independent schools; Corran School for Girls in Watford and Cheltenham Ladies' College in Cheltenham. In 1915, she went to Somerville College, Oxford, as a commoner to study modern history. Her college tutors were Margaret Hayes Robinson and Florence O'Loughlin. During her time at the University of Oxford, she was awarded a blue for lacrosse. In 1918, she graduated with a distinguished first class honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Academic career Procter began her academic career as a teacher at Saint Felix School, Southwold. She spent the first two years after graduating teaching. Commoner (academia)
A commoner is a student at certain universities in the British Isles who historically pays for his own tuition and commons, typically contrasted with scholars and exhibitioners, who were given financial emoluments towards their fees. Cambridge Commoners were also known as pensioners at the University of Cambridge. Pensioners paid for their own tuition and commons. A fellow‑commoner was a rank of student above pensioners but below noblemen. They paid double the tuition fee and enjoyed more privileges than pensioners, such as commoning with fellows. As fellow‑commoners had considerable wealth, they were ineligible for scholarships and paid fellowships at some colleges. Barbara Gwyer
Barbara Elizabeth Gwyer (1 January 1881 – 16 February 1974) was an English academic administrator. She was principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford, from 1924 to 1946. Early life and education Gwyer was born on 1 January 1881 in Marylebone, London, England. Her parents were John Edward Gwyer and Edith Gwyer (''née'' Linford), and she had a brother, Sir Maurice Gwyer. She was educated at the Grove School, an all-girls school in Highgate, Middlesex. In 1900, she went to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford to study classics. She achieved a second class in Mods in 1902, and a second class in '' Literae Humaniores'' in 1904. However, she could not graduate as at the time the University of Oxford only gave degrees to men. Tutorial System
The tutorial system is a method of university education where the main teaching method is regular, very small group sessions. These are the core teaching sessions of a degree, and are supplemented by lectures, practicals and larger group classes. This system is found at the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge, although other universities use this method to various degrees. The Biblioteca Nacional de España (''National Library of Spain'') is a major public library, the largest in Spain, and one of the largest in the world. Mary Somerville
Mary Somerville (; , formerly Greig; 26 December 1780 – 29 November 1872) was a Scottish scientist, writer, and polymath. She studied mathematics and astronomy, and in 1835 she and Caroline Herschel were elected as the first female Honorary Members of the Royal Astronomical Society. When John Stuart Mill organized a massive petition to Parliament to give women the right to vote, he made sure that the first signature on the petition would be Somerville's. In 1834 she became the first person to be described in print as a 'scientist'. When she died in 1872, ''The Morning Post'' declared in her obituary that "Whatever difficulty we might experience in the middle of the nineteenth century in choosing a king of science, there could be no question whatever as to the queen of science". Saint Felix School
Saint Felix School is a 2–18 mixed, independent, day and boarding school in Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk, England. The school was founded in 1897 as a school for girls but is now co-educational. History The school was founded in 1897 as a girls' school by Margaret Isabella Gardiner. By September 1902, the present site of the school had been purchased and the first four boarding houses and teaching block completed. In 1909 Lucy Mary Silcox took over as headmistress from the founding head. The student roll grew and in 1910, the Gardiner Assembly Hall and a Library were built and Clough House followed in 1914. Silcox was able to bring leading thinkers and artists to the school and money was found to buy sculpture and paintings. The British undergraduate degree classification system is a grading structure for undergraduate degrees or bachelor's degrees and integrated master's degrees in the United Kingdom.
