Eve Poole
Eve Poole (born Eva Auerbach; 29 December 1924 – 26 December 1992) was a New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Invercargill from 1983 until her death in 1992. She was the first woman and Jew to hold this position. Early life Poole was born in Frankfurt, Germany on 29 December 1924 to Polish migrants Hinde and Nachman Auerbach. She was named Eva after her maternal aunt. The family moved to Berlin in the late 1920s. Her father was brutally beaten in a Nazi street demonstration against Jews in 1932, and thus began a years-long struggle to migrate the family to Palestine. While much of Poole's maternal family also made it to Palestine, her father's family was largely wiped out in The Holocaust. Poole and her sister Pnina would often have to give up their beds to fellow refugees that their family would shelter. Companion Of The Queen's Service Order
The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". This order was created after a review of New Zealand's honours system in 1974. The Queen's Service Order replaced the Imperial Service Order in New Zealand. MS Wanganella
MS ''Wanganella'' was an Australian-registered ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff that entered service on the trans-Tasman route in 1933. Originally named ''Achimota'', she was acquired by Huddart Parker after the original sale to Elder Dempster Lines fell through. Renamed ''Wanganella'', the ship sailed between New Zealand and Australia until 1941, when she was converted into a hospital ship. As Australian Hospital Ship (AHS) ''Wanganella'', the ship operated in support of Australian forces until 1946, when she was returned to her civilian operator. In the 1950s and 1960s ''Wanganella'' was affected by several incidents of industrial action by wharf labourers. The increase in travel by air made operating the ship less viable, but before the ship was due to be scrapped in 1963, she was acquired and moored in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand, and used as a hostel for construction workers building the Manapouri Power Station until 1970. Russell Miller (mayor)
Francis Russell Miller (2 February 1914 – 25 February 1992) was a New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Invercargill from 1971 to 1983. Early life Miller was born in Dunedin and raised in Invercargill. He attended St. George Primary School and Southland Boys' High School. After graduating from the University of Otago Medical School with Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, he spent seven years in Britain studying at the University of Edinburgh and practising as a surgeon during World War II. He returned to Invercargill in 1946 and worked as a general practitioner until 1957. Political career Miller entered politics in 1962, winning a seat on the Invercargill City Council as the highest polling non-incumbent candidate. Catherine Tizard
Dame Catherine Anne Tizard (née Maclean; 4 April 1931 – 31 October 2021) was a New Zealand politician who served as mayor of Auckland City from 1983 to 1990, and the 16th governor-general of New Zealand from 1990 to 1996. She was the first woman to hold either office. Personal life and early career Catherine Anne Maclean was born in Auckland on 4 April 1931 to Scottish immigrants Neil and Helen Maclean, and grew up in Waharoa, near Matamata, Waikato. Her father worked at the local dairy factory. She attended Matamata College, gaining a University Bursary in her final year, 1948. ''Dangerous Corner'' was the first play by the English writer J. B. Priestley. It was premiered in May 1932 by Tyrone Guthrie at the Lyric Theatre, London, and filmed in 1934 by Phil Rosen. Priestley had recently collaborated with Edward Knoblock on ''The Good Companions'' and now wished "to prove that a man might produce long novels and yet be able to write effectively, using the strictest economy, for the stage." While it was praised highly by James Agate, ''Dangerous Corner'' received extremely poor reviews and after three days he was told that the play would be taken off, a fate that he averted by buying out the syndicate.
