Evangeline (1929 Film)
''Evangeline'' is a 1929 American silent film directed by Edwin Carewe and starring Dolores del Río. An Arthur Hopkins produced play made it to Broadway in 1913. It is the last silent film version of the 1847 poem of the same name by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This film was released with a Vitaphone disc selection of dialogue, music, and sound effects. Edwin Carewe
Edwin Carewe (March 3, 1883 – January 22, 1940) was an American motion picture director, actor, producer, and screenwriter. His birth name was Jay John Fox; he was born in Gainesville, Texas. Career After brief studies at the Universities of Texas and Missouri and a period of work with regional theatrical groups, Carewe moved to New York City in 1910, where he became a member of the Dearborn Stock Company. Although Jay Fox was his given name, Carewe chose Edwin (from stage actor Edwin Booth) and Carewe from a character he was playing. Carewe was on stage as an actor before he worked for Lubin studios. Later, he directed films for MGM, First National Pictures, First National, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and United Artists. During his career, he provided early screen exposure to many actors such as Dolores del Río, Warner Baxter, Francis X. Bushman and Gary Cooper. Donald Reed (actor)
Donald Reed (born Ernesto Avila Guillen; July 23, 1901 – February 28, 1973) was a Mexican film actor, and later, Beverly Hills video consultant. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1925 and 1940. Biography Reed was born in Mexico City as Ernesto Avila Guillen, the son of Alberto Guillen, a shoe merchant. His name was changed to Ernest Gillen when he signed with Universal. When he later signed with First National, his name was changed to Donald Reed. He married the beauty pageant winner Janet Eastman and the two had one daughter together, Joy. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico and died in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. Louis Payne
William Louis Payne (January 13, 1873 – August 14, 1953) was an American character actor of the silent and sound film eras, as well as legitimate theater. Biography Born in Pennsylvania, Payne's acting life began in the first decade of the 1900s, when he appeared in the Broadway play, ''Her Majesty, the Girl Queen of Nordenmark'', which ran at the Manhattan Theatre in 1900. In 1903 he played Nathaniel Winkle in ''Mr. Pickwick'' at the Herald Square Theatre and later the Grand Opera House. In 1906, he married famous stage actress Mrs. Leslie Carter, fifteen years her junior, and remained married to her until her death in 1937. He made his film debut in 1915's '' DuBarry'', a film created to highlight Carter, who was a protégé of the playwright David Belasco. Belasco wrote the stage play of the same name on which the film is based, and in which Carter starred on Broadway.
