The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana ( ee, Presbyteria Nyanyui Hame le Ghana) is a mainline Protestant Christian denomination in Ghana. It is popularly referred to as the "EP Church". It has strong roots in the Evangelical and Reformed traditions. The denomination's Presbyterian sister church is the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. History The Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana was founded by German missionaries on 14 November 1847 in Peki. These missionaries from the North German Mission Society (''Norddeutsche Mission, Bremen''), together with the Basel Mission in 1847, started work among the Ewe people in what is now the Volta Region of Ghana. North German Missionary Society
The North German Missionary Society or North German Mission is a Presbyterian Christian organisation based in Bremen formed on 19 April 1836 to unify missionary work in North Germany. The society has also been active among the Ewes in southeastern Gold Coast, now Ghana. The mission was engaged in New Zealand and India prior to concentrating its activities in Ghana from 1847. Reverend Johan Hartwig Bauer was the first Inspector and he established a school for missionaries in Hamburg. History The North German Mission was founded in 1836 by Lutheran and Reformed missionary associations in Hamburg. Missionary Carl Sylvius Völkner arrived in New Zealand on behalf of the Society in 1849 and was murdered there by the Māori as a missionary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1865, provoking a military backlash. Japhet Yao Ledo is a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (E.P. Church). He served as moderator of the church from January 1993 to January 2001, when he was replaced by Livingstone Komla Buama. Ledo hails from Klefe in the Volta Region of Ghana, just as his successor Buama. After retiring as Moderator, he served in various capacities including as Chairman of the Evangelical Presbyterian University Fund Raising Committee. Noah Komla Dzobo
Noah Komla Dzobo (died 2010) was an academic and religious leader. He was also a former moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana. He was the chairman of the Dzobo committee that preceded the reform of the basic education system in Ghana. He served as the head of the E. P. Church from 1981 until 1993 when he was succeeded by Japhet Ledo. He died in 2010 and was buried at his request at the eastern premises of the Anfoega Bume E. P. Church. The current moderator of the General Assembly of the church, Francis Amenu, and the head of the Global Evangelical Church, E. K. Gbordzoe, embraced each other. The Global Evangelical Church is a breakaway branch of the E. P. Church following a schism some years ago. Livingstone Komla Buama
The Right Reverend Livingstone Asong Komla Buama is a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (E.P. Church). Buama hails from Klefe in the Volta Region of Ghana. He became moderator in January 2001 after serving for over 25 years in the church. Prior to this, he had been lecturing at the Trinity College and Seminary at Legon in Ghana. Livingstone Buama was runner up in elections as Volta Region's representative on the Council of State of Ghana in February 2009. Moderator Of The General Assembly
The moderator of the General Assembly is the chairperson of a General Assembly, the highest court of a Presbyterian or Reformed church. Kirk sessions and presbyteries may also style the chairperson as moderator. The Oxford Dictionary states that a Moderator may be a "Presbyterian minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body". Presbyterian churches are ordered by a presbyterian polity, including a hierarchy of councils or courts of elders, from the local church (kirk) Session through presbyteries (and perhaps synods) to a General Assembly. The moderator presides over the meeting of the court, much as a convener presides over the meeting of a church committee. Togoland was a German Empire protectorate in West Africa from 1884 to 1914, encompassing what is now the nation of Togo and most of what is now the Volta Region of Ghana, approximately 90,400 km2 (29,867 sq mi) in size. During the period known as the " Scramble for Africa", the colony was established in 1884 and was gradually extended inland. The Gold Coast was a British Crown colony on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa from 1821 until its independence in 1957 as Ghana.
