Evangelical Covenant Church
The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) is a Radical Pietistic denomination with Lutheran roots in the evangelical Christian tradition. The denomination has 129,015 members in 878 congregations and an average worship attendance of 219,000 people in the United States and Canada with ministries on five continents. Founded in 1885 in North America by Swedish immigrants, the church is now one of the most rapidly growing and multi-ethnic denominations on the continent. Historically Lutheran in theology, piety and background, it is now a broadly evangelical movement. Pietist
Pietism (), also known as Pietistic Lutheranism, is a movement within Lutheranism that combines its emphasis on biblical doctrine with an emphasis on individual piety and living a holy Christianity, Christian life, including a social concern for the needy and disadvantaged. Swedish Hospital (formerly Swedish Covenant Hospital) is a 312-bed nonprofit teaching hospital located on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. The hospital offers over 50 medical specialties, including neurosurgery for the spine and brain, integrative cancer care, heart services (including electrophysiology), women's health services, childbirth and emergency services. North Park Theological Seminary
North Park Theological Seminary is a seminary located in the North Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is the sole graduate theological school of the Evangelical Covenant Church. History In 1891, the school was founded by the Evangelical Covenant Church in Minneapolis. In 1894, the school moved to Chicago. The seminary shares a campus with North Park University, the denomination's liberal arts college. North Park University
North Park University is a private Christian university in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 1891 by the Evangelical Covenant Church. It is located on Chicago's north side and enrolls more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. History The university has its origins in the founding of North Park Theological Seminary in 1891 by the Evangelical Covenant Church in Minneapolis. In 1894, the school moved to Chicago and opened as North Park College. It moved to its present location at the corner of Foster and Kedzie, despite its remoteness from the Loop. The Gospel
The gospel or good news is a theological concept in several religions. In the historical Roman imperial cult and today in Christianity, the gospel is a message about salvation by a divine figure, a savior, who has brought peace or other benefits to humankind. In Ancient Greek religion, the word designated a type of sacrifice or ritual dedication intended to thank the gods upon receiving good news. The religious concept dates back at least as far as Greece's Classical era. Roman authors are known to have adopted it toward the end of the 1st century BCE, and Christians somewhat later. David Nyvall
David Nyvall (January 19, 1863 – February 6, 1946) was a Swedish immigrant to the United States and church leader who helped shape the Evangelical Covenant Church and establish North Park University in Chicago. Biography Upbringing and education Nyvall was born in Karlskoga, Sweden, the son of Carl Johan Nyvall, a colporteur who helped found the Mission Covenant Church in Sweden, and Anna Margareta Moberg. He immigrated to America in 1886 at age 23; he settled in Illinois and became involved in the nascent denomination in the states. Though his educational background was pre-med, he accepted an offer from Erik August Skogsbergh (1850–1939) to teach at his school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Paul Petter Waldenström
Paul Petter Waldenström (alternately spelled "Paul Peter") (20 July 1838 – 14 July 1917) was a Swedish theologian who became the most prominent leader of the free church movement in late 19th century Sweden. Waldenström was born in Luleå in northern Sweden, son of a district physician. He began his academic studies at Uppsala University in 1857, completed his Ph.D. degree there in 1863, and was ordained a priest in 1864. He had been employed as an adjunct in the Växjö högre allmänna läroverk (the secondary school in Växjö) already in 1862 and in 1864, when his doctorate qualified him for this, received a lecturership in Christianity, Greek and Hebrew at the secondary school in Umeå. Carl August Björk
Carl August Björk (27 July 1837 – 29 October 1916) was a Swedish missionary preacher in the Midwestern United States. He was the founder of the Mission Friends – some of which later developed into the Evangelical Covenant Church, a Radical Pietistic Christian denomination with Lutheran roots, which he played a key role in founding.
