Eva Ligeti
Eva Bobbi Ligeti (born 1950) is a Canadian lawyer and academic, with a particular focus on environmental law and regulation. She was the first Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. History Eva Ligeti was appointed in 1994 as the first Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. Her selection was made by an all-party committee of Ontario provincial legislature. Ligeti remained Commissioner until 1999, reviewing the government's compliance with the Environmental Bill of Rights and reporting to an all-party committee of the Ontario legislature. In her annual report of April, 1999, she warned of a public health crisis as a result of high levels of air pollution. Her five-year appointment was not renewed, as she was so advised by the government in August 1999. Environmental Commissioner Of Ontario
The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO; french: Commissaire à l’environnement de l’Ontario) was a non-partisan officer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario charged with upholding the province's '' Environmental Bill of Rights'' (EBR). The Commissioner did not report to any ministry, but rather to the Legislature itself, and was selected via recommendation by an all-party committee chaired by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The candidate was then appointed by unanimous vote of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The Office of the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario consisted of the Commissioner and 24 staff, who supported the Commissioner in overseeing the administration of the EBR and producing reports to the Legislature. The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) is a non-profit, public interest organization established in 1970 to use existing laws to protect the environment and to advocate environmental law reforms. It is also a free legal advisory clinic for the public, and will act at hearings and in courts on behalf of citizens or citizens' groups who are otherwise unable to afford legal assistance. Funded by Legal Aid Ontario, CELA is one of 79 community legal clinics located across Ontario, 15 of which offer services in specialized areas of the law. Gord Miller (born March 27, 1953) is a Canadian politician who was the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, having served from February 1, 2000 to May 18, 2015. He was appointed to a five-year term in 2000 and was reappointed to this position in 2005 and 2010 for two consecutive five-year terms. Early life Before his appointment, he worked for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for 14 years as a scientist, manager of training and development, and as a district manager.
