Eurovision Song Contest 1989
The Eurovision Song Contest 1989 was the 34th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, following Céline Dion's victory at the with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi". Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR), the contest was held at Palais de Beaulieu on 6 May 1989 and was hosted by Swiss model Lolita Morena and journalist Jacques Deschenaux. Twenty-two countries took part in the contest with returning after having been disqualified the year before. The winner was with the song " Rock Me" by Croatian band Riva. This was the only victory for Yugoslavia as a unified state. As of 2022 they are still the last act to win the contest performing last. Jacques Deschenaux
Jacques Deschenaux (born 9 December 1945 in Fribourg) is a Swiss journalist and television personality. He has worked for many years with the sports programming at the French branch of Swiss television. Among his journalistic works is a biography of Swiss racing driver Jo Siffert. In 1989 he co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest with Lolita Morena. Anders Berglund
Anders Olof Berglund (born 21 July 1948) is a Swedish arranger, composer, conductor, pianist and musician. Career Born in Stockholm, Berglund is best known as conductor of Melodifestivalen, the Swedish final of the Eurovision Song Contest. He was musical director of the ESC when the event was hosted by Sweden in Malmö in 1992. In addition he also acted as one of the Swedish commentators for the 1999 Contest together with Pekka Heino. In the 1970s he was a member of the band Blue Swede. He composed the music of the musical ''SKÅL'' at the Maxim-theatre in 1985. 1997-2005 he was one of the team captains/pianists in the popular Swedish TV show Så ska det låta. In Autumn 2007, Berglund arranged the music in the musical "Sound of Music" at the Göta Lejon. Ronnie Hazlehurst
Ronald Hazlehurst (13 March 1928 – 1 October 2007) was an English composer and conductor who, having joined the BBC in 1961, became its Light Entertainment Musical Director. Hazlehurst composed the theme tunes for many well-known British sitcoms and gameshows of the 1970s and the 1980s, including ''Yes Minister'', ''Are You Being Served?'', ''I Didn't Know You Cared'' and ''Last of the Summer Wine''. Early life Ronald Hazlehurst was born in Dukinfield, Cheshire, in 1928, to a railway worker father and a piano teacher mother. Having attended Hyde County Grammar School, he left at the age of 14 and became a clerk in a cotton mill for £1 a week. From 1947 to 1949 he did his National Service as a bandsman in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards. During his spare time, he played in a band, and soon became a professional musician earning £4 a week. Timur Selçuk (2 July 1946 – 6 November 2020) was a Turkish composer, pianist, singer and conductor. Biography One of the greatest Turkish composers, Timur Selçuk was the son of Turkish neo-classical music composer Münir Nurettin Selçuk and actress Şehime Erton. His great-uncle was the Ottoman Grand Vizier Abdurrahman Nurettin Pasha. His younger brother is jazz drummer and composer Selim Selçuk. Harry van Hoof (born 16 March 1943) is a Dutch conductor, composer and music arranger. Van Hoof has written many successful productions to his name already, he has his own production company and he had his first success as an arranger with "Sofie" by Johnny Lion. Noel Kelehan
John William "Noel" Kelehan (26 December 1935 – 6 February 2012) was an Irish musician, former conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and former musical director of Radio Telefís Éireann. He retired as conductor in 1998. Life and career As well as being an accomplished jazz pianist, he was most famous for being the conductor of many Irish entries to the Eurovision Song Contest, beginning in 1966 and ending in 1998. He conducted five winning Irish entries, in 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993, and 1996. In 1994, the winning song was performed without orchestral accompaniment. However, an entry rated second that year, "To nie ja!" performed by Edyta Górniak from Poland, was also conducted by Kelehan. He also conducted the entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993.
