European Route E22 In The Netherlands
European route E 22 (E 22) is a west–east European route, running from Holyhead in the United Kingdom, through the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Latvia, to Ishim in Russia. The highway is maintained by Rijkswaterstaat. Route description In the Netherlands, E 22 starts in southwestern Amsterdam at De Nieuwe Meer Interchange where A4 starts its course and branches off from the A10, the ring road around Amsterdam. E 22 runs north concurrent with Ring A10. After a few exits A5 joins E 22/A10 just before E 22/A10, concurrent, pass under the North Sea Canal using a group of tunnels called the first and second Coen Tunnel. Through the Coen Tunnels, E 22/A10/ have extra lanes only used in rush hour. Shortly after they get to Coenplein-Noord Interchange, where Ring A10 continues east and E 22 branches of to the northwest, now concurrent with A8. Den Oever (; in English, the ''shore, the coast'') is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, and lies about east of Den Helder. Medemblik () is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West-Frisia. It lies immediately south of the polder and former municipality of Wieringermeer. Purmerend () is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and in the region of West Friesland. The Second Coen Tunnel is a tunnel under the North Sea Canal, next to the Coen Tunnel in Amsterdam. The tunnel was built in combination with a new highway connection, the Westrandweg, to the A5 motorway. The tunnel consists of 3 fixed lanes and two reversible lanes, which are opened in the direction where traffic is the heaviest. Coen Tunnel
The Coentunnel (1966) is a tunnel in the A10 motorway under the North Sea Canal in western Amsterdam. The tunnel is named for the 17th-century colonizer Jan Pieterszoon Coen. The tunnel itself is 1283 metres long of which 587 metres are fully covered. The tunnel connects the Zaan district with the western part of Amsterdam. The tunnel reaches a maximum depth of 22 metres. Before the tunnel was built, the Hem ferry and, to a lesser degree, the Schellingwouder bridge were the most important connections between Amsterdam and Zaandam, and this was a serious bottleneck for traffic. North Sea Canal
The North Sea Canal ( nl, Noordzeekanaal) is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam.
