The European Film Academy is an initiative of a group of European filmmakers who came together in Berlin on the occasion of the first presentation of the European Film Awards in November 1988. The Academy—under the name of European Cinema Society—was officially founded by its first President, the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, as well as 40 filmmakers from all over Europe, among them Bernardo Bertolucci, Claude Chabrol, Dušan Makavejev, István Szabó, and Wim Wenders. Every year, the European Film Academy honours films and filmmakers with the European Film Awards. Joe Comerford
Joe Comerford (born 1947) is an Irish film director. His film '' Reefer and the Model'' (1988) earned three nominations at the European Film Awards, winning none. Career Comerford was born in 1947 in Dublin, Ireland, graduating from the National College of Art and Design in the 1960s. In the 1970s, he began working for RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster, where he learned camera operating and general studio production. Two years later, he left RTE to make independent films. In 1969, he made ''Swan Alley''. His first public short, ''Emtigon'' (1971) was followed by ''Withdrawal'' (1973) and ''Down the Corner'' (1977). He has directed three feature films – ''Traveller'' (1981), written by Neil Jordan, '' Reefer and the Model'' (1988) and '' High Boot Benny'' (1993). Ademir Kenović (born September 14, 1950) is a Bosnian film director and producer. He graduated from the University of Sarajevo in 1975. In 1972–73 he studied film, English literature and art at the Denison University in Ohio. His films include ''Kuduz'' (1989) and '' A Little Bit of Soul'' (1987). His 1997 work ''The Perfect Circle'' won the François Chalais Prize. He also produced the popular 2004 Bosnian film ''Days and Hours''. ''Kuduz'' is a 1989 film, set in SR Bosnia and Herzegovina written by Abdulah Sidran and Ademir Kenović, who also directed the film. It is based on the true story of the outlaw Junuz Kečo. Plot A petty criminal is released from prison and marries his girlfriend. Ömer Zülfü Livaneli (born 20 June 1946), is a Turkish musician, author, poet, and politician. Livaneli was imprisoned several times during the 1971 Turkish coup d'état because of his political views and had to leave Turkey in 1972 and went on exile. He lived in Stockholm, Paris, Athens, and New York where he met and collaborated with artists and intellectuals such as Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, James Baldwin, and Peter Ustinov among others. Livaneli returned to Turkey in 1984. His works and cultural and political activities and contributions to world peace were recognized by UNESCO in 1995 when he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador to UNESCO. Franco Cristaldi (3 October 1924 – 1 July 1992) was an Italian film producer, credited with producing (or co-producing) feature films from the 1950s to the 1990s. Nigel Stafford-Clark
Nigel Stafford-Clark (born 12 June 1948) is a British film and television producer, and the brother of the theatre director Max Stafford-Clark. He was educated at Felsted and Trinity College, Cambridge, and worked in advertising and in sponsored documentaries before becoming a commercials producer at Moving Picture Company (MPC). In the buildup to the launch of Channel 4 in November 1982, he formed MPC's programme department, executive producing a number of documentary series for the new channel, including one of its earliest hits ''Tom Keating on Painters''.
