European Film Award For Best Documentary
The European Film Award for Best Documentary or Prix Arte has been awarded annually since 1989 by the European Film Academy. Special Mentions were presented alongside the winner of the award until 1993, since 1999 a set of nominees are presented out of which a winner is chosen. Criteria Documentary films taken into consideration must have a minimum length of 70 minutes. European Film Award
The European Film Awards (or European Film Academy Awards) have been presented annually since 1988 by the European Film Academy to recognize excellence in European film, cinematic achievements. The awards are given in 19 categories, of which the most important is the ''Best Film''. They are restricted to Cinema of Europe, European cinema and European producers, directors, and actors. The awards were officially also called the "Felix Awards" until 1997, in reference to the former award's trophy statuette, which was replaced by a feminine statuette. Since 1997, the European Film Awards have been held in early- to mid-December. Hosting duties have alternated between Berlin, Germany in odd-numbered years and other Lists of cities in Europe, European cities in even-numbered years. ''Pictures of the Old World'' ( sk, Obrazy starého sveta) is a 1972 Slovak documentary film by Dušan Hanák Dušan Hanák (April 27, 1938 in Bratislava) is a Slovak people, Slovak film director. Hanák graduated from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, FAMU (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts) in Pragu .... Stefan Jarl
Stefan Jarl (born 18 March 1941) is a Swedish film director best known for his documentaries. Together with Jan Lindqvist he made the ''Mods Trilogy'', three films which follow a group of alienated people in Stockholm from the 1960s to the 1990s, '' They Call Us Misfits'' (1968), '' A Respectable Life'' (1979) and ''The Social Heritage'' (1993). ''A Respectable Life'' won the 1979 Guldbagge Awards for Best Film and Best Director. Paweł Aleksander Pawlikowski (; born 15 September 1957) is a Polish filmmaker. He garnered early praise for a string of documentaries in the 1990s and for his award-winning feature films of the 2000s, '' Last Resort'' (2000) and ''My Summer of Love'' (2004). His success continued into the 2010s with ''Ida'' (2013), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and ''Cold War'' (2018), for which Pawlikowski won the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, while the film received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Early life Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a father who was a doctor and a mother who started as a ballet dancer and later became an English literature professor at the University of Warsaw. Maciej Drygas (born 1956 in film, 1956 in Łódź) is a Polish documentary film, documentary filmmaker. Career Following graduation from the Directing Department of the Moscow All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), also known as the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, he worked as an assistant to Krzysztof Zanussi and Krzysztof Kieślowski. His first documentary as director was ''Hear My Cry (1991 film), Hear My Cry'', about Ryszard Siwiec, who, in September 1968, protested against communist totalitarianism, and in particular the entry of Warsaw Pact forces into Czechoslovakia, by setting fire to himself (self-immolation) in front of thousands of people during the harvest festival at the 10th Anniversary Stadium in Warsaw, an incident that was censored in the media at the time. Hear My Cry (1991 Film)
''Hear My Cry'', (Polish: ''Usłyszcie mój krzyk'', literally "Hear My Scream") is a 1991 Polish documentary film directed by Maciej Drygas. Storyline The story of an ordinary accountant from south-east Poland, Ryszard Siwiec, who set himself on fire during the large harvest festival at the Warsaw National Stadium, Warsaw, stadium in 1968. He did it to protest Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, against the military invasion in Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, Czechoslovakia. Production The film's director, Maciej Drygas, first learned of Ryszard Siwiec in the summer of 1989 when he read an interview in Gazeta Wyborcza with Adam Macedoński who worked to further Polish-Czech relations. Drygas was currently writing a screenplay which included the story of the self-immolation of Romas Kalanta and became interested in the phenomenon and the lack of information on Siwiec's death. ''Step Across the Border'' is a 1990 avant-garde documentary film on English guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith. It was written and directed by Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel and released in Germany and Switzerland. The film was screened in cinemas in North America, South America, Europe and Japan, and on television in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. It was also released on VHS by RecRec Music (Switzerland) in 1990, and was later released on DVD by Winter & Winter Records (Germany) in 2003. Shot in black and white, the 35mm documentary was filmed between 1988 and 1990 in Japan, Italy, France, Germany, England, the United States and Switzerland, and shows Frith rehearsing, performing, giving interviews and relaxing.
