The European Film Awards (or European Film Academy Awards) have been presented annually since 1988 by the European Film Academy to recognize excellence in European film, cinematic achievements. The awards are given in 19 categories, of which the most important is the ''Best Film''. They are restricted to Cinema of Europe, European cinema and European producers, directors, and actors. The awards were officially also called the "Felix Awards" until 1997, in reference to the former award's trophy statuette, which was replaced by a feminine statuette. Pierfrancesco Diliberto, nicknamed Pif (born 1972), is an Italian television host, film director, actor and writer. Biography and career Pif was born in Palermo, Italy on 4 June 1972. He is the son of the Italian director Maurizio Diliberto and has had a passion for cinema since his youth. Jaco Van Dormael (born 9 February 1957) is a Belgian film director, screenwriter and playwright. His films especially focus on a respectful and sympathetic portrayal of people with mental and physical disabilities. Van Dormael spent his childhood travelling around Europe, before going on to study filmmaking at the INSAS in Brussels, where he wrote and directed his first short film, '' Maedeli la brèche'' (1981), which received the Honorary Foreign Film Award at the Student Academy Awards.
