European Bowls Championships
The European Bowls Championship formerly the European Bowls Team Championships is a biennial continental lawn bowls tournament for European nations. From its inauguration in 1997 until September 2021, the tournament was organised by the European Bowls Union (EBU). In September 2021, the members of what was the "European Bowls Union" (E.B.U.) voted unanimously, to rebrand and be replaced by the newly formed, limited company, Bowls Europe Ltd (registered in Scotland). The competition now features the traditional four disciplines of singles, pairs, triples and fours. Bowls
Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). It is normally played outdoors (although there are many indoor venues) and the outdoor surface is either natural grass, artificial turf or cotula (in New Zealand). Sarah Gourlay
Sarah Gourlay is a Scottish international lawn and indoor bowler born on 28 September 1937. Bowls career She played lead for the Scottish fours team when winning the 1985 World Outdoor Bowls Championship gold medal in Brisbane. In 1992 she won the 1992 World Indoor Bowls Championship in Guernsey defeating Mary Price in the final. In 1993 she won the fours gold medal at the inaugural Atlantic Bowls Championships and four years later won a fours bronze at the Championships. She competed at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 in the fours event, in 1990 in the pairs event, in 1994 where she won a gold medal in the pairs event, in 1998 in the fours event, and in 2002 in the fours event. She also won the Scottish National Bowls Championships singles title in 1991 & 1995 and the pairs title in 1968 bowling for Annbank. Mary Price (27 August 1943 – 5 May 2023) was an English international lawn bowler and indoor bowler. Bowls career Mary Price was from Farnham Common in Slough and played competitive cricket, badminton, squash, and hockey but achieved her greatest successes in bowls. After winning the National title in 1988 she became the first woman in England to win both the indoor and outdoor singles titles. She subsequently won the singles at the British Isles Bowls Championships in 1989. Her greatest win was arguably the singles title at the 1991 World Indoor Bowls Championships. Norma Shaw (1937-2009), born near Wakefield, was an English international indoor and lawn bowler. Bowls career World Championship Norma won twelve World Outdoor Bowls Championship medals. The success started with two gold medals and a bronze medal at the 1981 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Toronto. Four years later she won a silver medal and another bronze at the 1985 World Outdoor Bowls Championship followed by two more silvers at the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. Norma then competed in her fourth and fifth successive championships at the 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and 1996 World Outdoor Bowls Championship securing a bronze in both. Mervyn John King (born 4 January 1966, in King's Lynn) is an international lawn and indoor bowler from Fakenham. Bowls career King has represented England at three Commonwealth Games, the 2002, 2006 and the 2010 Commonwealth Games where he won a silver medal, with Stuart Airey, in the men's pairs competition. Julie Forrest (born 3 November 1968) is a Scottish bowls player. Bowls career Outdoors Julie has won three World Outdoor medals, a silver medal in the fours at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Johannesburg and two bronze medals as part of the Scottish team that competed in the Taylor Trophy. She also competed at the 1996, 2000 and 2016. She was selected to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and also won the Scottish National Bowls Championships pairs title in 1988 and triples title in 1997 bowling for Hawick.
