Eurombah is a rural locality split between the Shire of Banana and the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Eurombah had a population of 67 people. Geography The '' Dawson River'' forms part of the northern boundary. The neighbourhoods of Peek-A-Doo and Hornet Bank are within the locality. History The Hornet Bank massacre in 1857 happened nearby. The Peek-A-Doo State School opened on 3 February 1964 at 10118 Roma Taroom Road (). It was mothballed on 13 April 2010 (having no students). In June 2010, there was outrage when it was announced that the then-mothballed school would be allocated $250,000 by the Australian Government's Building the Education Revolution school building program to construct a resource centre. The Shire of Banana is a local government area located in the Capricorn region of Queensland, Australia, inland from the regional city of Gladstone. The shire was named after the first township in the region (Banana), which in turn was named for the burial site of a huge dun coloured bullock named 'Banana'. The council sits in the town of Biloela, which is the largest town in the Shire. Major industries in the shire include coal mining, beef production, power generation, dryland cropping and irrigation cropping such as lucerne and cotton. Taroom
Taroom is a town in the Shire of Banana and locality split between the Shire of Banana and the Western Downs Region in Queensland, Australia. At the , Taroom had a population of 869 people. Geography The town is located on the Dawson River and the Leichhardt Highway, north west of the state capital, Brisbane, from Rockhampton and from Toowoomba. History Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed through the district in 1844, carving his initials and date on a coolibah tree that now stands in the centre of town. Leichhardt's carving is no longer visible following an alleged attempt to remove bark growing over the initials that removed the initials as well. Reporting the rich soils in the area, settlers began taking up land in 1845 and by 1850 a town had been established at a popular camping spot near the Dawson River. Fraser Family Grave Site And Memorial, Hornet Bank
The Fraser family grave site and memorial at Hornet Bank is a heritage-listed cemetery and memorial at Hornet Bank Station, Hornet Bank Road, Eurombah near Taroom, Shire of Banana, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 18 September 2008. History Hornet Bank station in the upper Dawson River district was taken up in 1853 by Andrew Scott and the homestead, on a reduced acreage, remains the property of his direct descendants. In 1857 the station was the site of the killing by local Aborigines of eleven settlers, eight of whom were members of the Fraser family, who were managing Hornet Bank for Scott. The Hornet Bank massacre resonated deeply in colonial circles, escalating the frontier war in the Dawson River district and prejudicing subsequent European-Indigenous relationships throughout Queensland for decades. Hornet Bank Massacre
The Hornet Bank massacre involves the killing of eleven settlers (seven members of the Fraser family, including a woman and five of her children) and one Aboriginal station-hand, by a group of Iman Aboriginal Australians. The massacre occurred at about one or two o'clock in the morning of 27 October 1857 at Hornet Bank station on the upper Dawson River near Eurombah in central Queensland, Australia. It has been moderately estimated that 150 Aboriginal people succumbed in subsequent punitive missions conducted by Native Police, private settler militias, and by William Fraser in or around Eurombah district.
