EuroBasket 1935
The 1935 FIBA European Championship, commonly called EuroBasket 1935, was the first FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA, as well as a test event preceding the first Olympic basketball tournament at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Ten national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) took part in the competition. The event was hosted by Switzerland and held in Geneva in May, 1935. The 2012 Latvian film '' Dream Team 1935'' is based on the events of the tournament. It tells the story of the Latvian national basketball team, the winners of the tournament. Preliminary round Before the tournament began, a qualification game was played between Spain and Portugal. The game was held in Madrid, Spain and refereed by Spanish coach Mariano Manent. Džems Raudziņš
Džems Raudziņš (1 December 1910 – 13 December 1979) was a Latvian basketball player. Raudziņš won a gold medal at the 1935 EuroBasket competition, becoming the first European champion. He participated also at the 1936 Summer Olympics and at the 1937 EuroBasket. Career Raudziņš was born in Harbin, Manchuria where during the first half of the 20th century a notable Latvian community existed. After the First World War his family returned to Latvia. Raudziņš studied law at the University of Latvia and besides basketball worked at the Latvian Ministry of Interior in the 1930s. Raudziņš played basketball since late 1920s. He played most of his career for the university team ''Universitātes Sports'' and became a five time Latvian champion (1930; 1934-1937). Jānis Lidmanis
Jānis Lidmanis (18 January 1910 – 29 November 1986) was a Latvian footballer and basketballer. Career In the 1930s he was the captain of Latvia national football team for which he made 55 appearances (second result in the pre-war Latvian team) and scored 2 goals. Lidmanis played of the football club Rīgas FK, the top Riga club of that era, and together with Ēriks Pētersons and Sergejs Maģers he made up the center midfield in the national team. One of his strengths was in the hands (he also played basketball and even played for Latvia in EuroBasket 1935), he also performed corner-kicks. In 1944 Lidmanis together with his family emigrated to Germany and in 1949 to Australia. Rūdolfs Jurciņš
Rūdolfs Jurciņš (19 June 1909 – 22 July 1948) was a Latvian basketball player. He played as a Center (basketball), center. Career Jurciņš won a gold medal at the EuroBasket 1935, 1935 EuroBasket competition, becoming first European champion. He participated at the 1936 Summer Olympics, where Latvia national basketball team got 15th/18th place. Jurciņš started to play basketball at the age of 15 in 1924. Before that he played football. He studied in the University of Latvia but did not graduate. However he played for University basketball team ''Universitātes sports'' from 1930 until 1937. He was a six-time Latvian champion. His debut in Latvian national basketball team was in 1928. Overall, he played 23 games in the national team and was a team captain. He was arrested in 1945 and deported to the GULAG camp in 1947. Mārtiņš Grundmanis
Mārtiņš Grundmanis (18 November 1913 – 30 November 1944) was a Latvian basketball player. Grundmanis won a gold medal at the 1935 EuroBasket competition, becoming the first European champion. He also participated at the 1936 Summer Olympics and at the 1937 EuroBasket. Career In the first half of the 1930s Grundmanis played for the JKS (Latvian Christian Youth) team. He was also a member of the Latvian Christian Youth Society, and graduated from a four-year physical education program at the University of Tartu. In late 1930s Grundmanis played for the military team Rīgas ASK, and became a two time Latvian champion (1939-1940). Overall Grundmanis played 20 games for the Latvian national basketball team. Aleksejs Anufrijevs (Russian: Алексей Никитич Ануфриев; 15 January 1912 – April 1945) was a Latvian basketball player of Russian origin. Anufrijevs won a gold medal at the 1935 EuroBasket competition, becoming the first European champion. He also participated (as a substitute) at the 1936 Summer Olympics and at the 1937 EuroBasket. Eduards Andersons (1 April 1914 – 29 November 1985) was a Latvians, Latvian basketball player. Andersons won a gold medal at the 1935 EuroBasket competition, becoming the first European champion. The Latvia men's national basketball team ( lv, Latvijas basketbola izlase) represents Latvia in international basketball. They are organized and run by the Latvian Basketball Association.
