Eurelia
Eurelia is a town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the east side of the Flinders Ranges about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about from the municipal seat of Orroroo. The town was surveyed in July 1878 and was gazetted as a government town on 12 September 1878 with its name being derived from the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Eurelia. The locality's boundaries were created on 16 December 1999 for the “long established name” and includes the site of the Government Town of Eurelia. Eurelia's name comes from the local Jadliaura language and translates to "place of the ear". Moockra, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Moockra is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-east and south-east respectively of the municipal seats of Melrose and Quorn. Boundaries for the locality were created on 13 March 1997 for the part within the District Council of Mount Remarkable, on 25 November 1999 for the part in the Flinders Ranges Council and on 16 December 1999 for the part in the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton. Its boundaries include the sites of the Government Towns of Hawkshaw and Moockra. Steamtown Peterborough Railway Preservation Society
The Steamtown Peterborough Railway Preservation Society Inc. (known colloquially as ''Steamtown'' and ''Steamtown Peterborough'') was a not-for-profit incorporated society that operated a heritage steam railway from Peterborough, South Australia, north along a section of the Peterborough to Quorn railway line, between 1977 and 2002. Hammond, South Australia
Hammond is a town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the southern Flinders Ranges. The town of Hammond was surveyed in May 1879 on the banks of the Bellaratta Creek. It is named after William Henry Hammond Jervois, the eldest son of Governor of South Australia William Jervois. St Dominic's Catholic Church in Hammond opened in 1907 but closed on 25 June 2006. Hammond school opened in 1886 but is also now closed. Railway From 1881, Hammond was on the Peterborough–Quorn railway line. Peterborough provided rail connection south to Adelaide, west to Port Pirie and east to Broken Hill. Quorn was on the Central Australia Railway from Port Augusta to Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Peterborough–Quorn Railway Line
The Peterborough–Quorn railway line was a railway line on the South Australian Railways network. Located in the upper Mid North of South Australia, it opened from Peterborough railway station, South Australia, Peterborough to Orroroo, South Australia, Orroroo on 23 November 1881, being extended to Quorn railway station, Quorn on 22 May 1882. Following the opening of the Trans-Australian Railway in 1917 it became part of the main Sydney-Perth rail corridor, east-west railway across Australia from Sydney to Perth. This ceased in 1937 when the Trans-Australian Railway was altered to operate via Port Pirie Junction railway station, Port Pirie. Peterborough, South Australia
Peterborough is a town in the mid north of South Australia, in wheat country, just off the Barrier Highway. At the , Peterborough had a population of 1,419. It was originally named Petersburg after the landowner, Peter Doecke, who sold land to create the town. It was one of 69 places in South Australia renamed in 1917 due to anti-German sentiments during World War I. History The first settlers in the area purchased land from the government in 1875. The first building in the town was constructed four years later. Settler Peter Doecke transferred his land to J H Koch in 1876, who found out in 1880 that the land would be the site of a railway junction. He subdivided it and sold for £1700, after failing to get £500 per acre for it in 1879. By 1880 a hotel and post office had been erected, followed by a school in 1883, and a town hall in 1884. Walloway (formerly Rye) is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about north of the state capital of Adelaide city centre, Adelaide and about north of the municipal seat of Orroroo, South Australia, Orroroo. The principal land use within the locality is primary production. History The Government Town of Walloway was surveyed in November 1881 and proclaimed with the name Rye on 30 March 1882. It was renamed as Walloway in 1940 in order to match the Wallaway railway station, which had been so named since 1851. The government town officially ceased to exist on 30 June 1988. District Council Of Carrieton
The District Council of Carrieton was a local government area in South Australia, centred on the town of Carrieton from 1888 until 1997. History The council was established on 5 January 1888 as the District Council of Eurelia under the provisions of the ''District Councils Act 1887''. The name of the municipality was changed to Carrieton on 31 May 1894, and was divided into six wards in 1896. In 1923, the municipality covered 491,200 acres, 33 miles in length and 26 miles in breadth. It had consisted of the Hundreds of Bendleby, Eurelia, Eurilpa, McCulloch, O'Laddie, Uroonda, Yalpara and Yanyarrie since 1896, when two earlier additional hundreds (Minburra and Waroonce, together comprising the council's Minburra Ward) were severed. Carrieton, South Australia
Carrieton is a small town situated in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. It is located between the towns of Orroroo to the south and Cradock to the north. Originally opened in 1877 as Yanyarrie Whim, (Yanyarrie is in the local indigenous dialect "eagle feathers") with the construction of a post office, the settlement was renamed in 1888 as Carrieton, after the daughter of Governor Jervois, Lucy Caroline. Railways The town was on the Peterborough–Quorn railway line which opened in December 1881, served by a Class 1 station. A large goods shed and fettler's cottage were also constructed. Passenger services were discontinued during 1969, when the South Australian Railways withdrew the railcar service. Declining rail traffic saw the gradual withdrawal of services on the railway, with the last station master being withdrawn on 1 July 1971. Orroroo, South Australia
Orroroo is a town in the Yorke and Mid North region of South Australia. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, the locality of Orroroo had a population of 610 while its urban centre had a population of 537. The Wilmington-Ucolta Road passes through here, intersecting with the RM Williams Way which leads to the Birdsville Track, Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. Coomooroo, South Australia
Coomooroo is a rural locality in the Mid North region of South Australia. Most of Coomooroo on its current boundaries lies within the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton; however, a small section on its western end lies within the District Council of Mount Remarkable. The Orroroo Carrieton section consists of a diagonal rural strip of the cadastral Hundred of Coomooroo separating the towns of Morchard and Walloway, with narrow strips of the Hundreds of Eurelia and Pinda at its north-western end. The locality is named after the hundred, which in turn was named by Governor Anthony Musgrave in 1875 after a word for "small food seeds" in an Aboriginal language. The County of Dalhousie is one of the Lands administrative divisions of South Australia, 49 cadastral counties of South Australia in straddling the Mid North and Flinders Ranges regions.
