Eugène Brieux (; 19 January 18586 December 1932), French dramatist, was born in Paris of poor parents. Biography Works A one-act play, ''Bernard Palissy'', written in collaboration with M. Gaston Salandri, was produced in 1879, but he had to wait eleven years before he obtained another hearing, his ''Ménage d'artistes'' being produced by André Antoine at the Théâtre Libre in 1890. His plays are essentially didactic, being aimed at some weakness or iniquity of the social system. ''Blanchette'' (1892) pointed out the civic results of education of girls of the working classes; ''Monsieur de Réboval'' (1892) was directed against pharisaism; ''L'Engrenage'' (1894) against corruption in politics; ''Les Bienfaiteurs'' (1896) against the frivolity of fashionable charity; and ''L'Évasion'' (1896) satirized an indiscriminate belief in the doctrine of heredity. Paul Mahlon Powell (September 6, 1881 – July 2, 1944) was an American journalist, film director, director, film producer, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Powell was most active during the silent film era and is best known for directing Mary Pickford in ''Pollyanna (1920 film), Pollyanna'' (1920). Career Born in Peoria, Illinois, Powell was one of six children of Charles Henry and Anna Clara Powell (''née'' von Schoenheider). His father was a publisher who founded the ''Peoria Evening Star''. Powell was educated in Peoria and later attended Bradley University, Bradley Polytechnic Institute. After graduation, he worked at his father's newspaper as a typesetter and editor before becoming a reporter. ''Damaged Goods'' is a 1919 British silent drama film directed by Alexander Butler and starring Campbell Gullan, Marjorie Day and J. Fisher White. Jacob Fleck
Jacob Fleck (8 November 1881 in Vienna as Jacob Julius Fleck – 19 September 1953, also in Vienna) was an Austrian film director, screenwriter, film producer and cameraman. He is noted for his long-standing professional partnership with his wife Luise Fleck who co-directed his films with him. Biography In 1910, together with Anton Kolm, Kolm's wife Luise (who later married Fleck), and her brother Claudius Veltée, Jacob Fleck established the film production company ''Erste Österreichische Kinofilms-Industrie'' in Wien-Alsergrund. The company changed its name only a year later to ''Wiener Kunstfilm-Industrie'', in which Fleck worked partly as a cameraman, but principally as a producer and director together with Luise Kolm in making numerous films. Anton Kolm died in 1922. In 1923 Fleck moved with Luise Kolm to Berlin, where they married in 1924: Luise was known from then on as Luise Fleck. Both of them worked for Hegewald-Film and UFA.
