Eugenia Calle
Eugenia E. “Jeanne” Calle (1952–2009) was an American cancer epidemiologist. Early life and education Calle grew up in Fairlawn, Ohio, and attended Copley High School in the 1960s. She received her bachelor's degree in medical communications from Columbia University and her doctoral degree in epidemiology from Ohio State University (Department of Preventive Medicine, College of Medicine). Academic career After working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the area of cancer risk assessment, and later the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the Agent Orange Projects, Calle joined the American Cancer Society (ACS) in 1989 as the director of their Study Management Group. She became the director of Analytic Epidemiology in Epidemiology and Surveillance at the ACS in 1999, and was later promoted to Vice President of Epidemiology there. Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they can also have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths.
