Eugene Perelshteyn
Eugene Perelshteyn (born 1980) is an American chess player and writer. He earned the FIDE titles#FIDE Master (FM), FIDE Master title in 1997, the International Master title in 2001, and the Grandmaster (chess), Grandmaster title in 2006. Born in Zhytomyr (then USSR), Perelshteyn began playing chess at around seven years old, taught by his father, Mikhail Perelshteyn, a FIDE master and professional chess coach. At age 10, he began playing in his first tournaments. He moved to the United States in 1994. He won the U.S. Junior Closed Championship in 2000 and was awarded the Samford Chess Fellowship by the US Chess Trust in 2001. After taking two years off from school to play chess professionally, Perelshteyn returned to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and graduated in 2004. Lev Alburt
Lev Osipovich Alburt (born August 21, 1945) is a chess Grandmaster, writer and coach. He was born in Orenburg, Russia, and became three-time Ukrainian Champion. After defecting to the United States in 1979, he became three-time U.S. Champion. Chess career Alburt won the Ukrainian Chess Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1974. He earned the International Master title in 1976, and became a Grandmaster in 1977. He defected to the United States in 1979, staying for several months with his former coach and fellow Ukrainian chess player and chess journalist Michael Faynberg. The Reykjavik Open is an annual chess tournament that takes place in the capital city of Iceland. It was held every two years up to 2008, currently it runs annually. The first edition was held in 1964 and was won by Mikhail Tal with a score of 12.5 points out of 13. The tournament is currently played with the Swiss system, while from 1964 to 1980 and in 1992 it was a round-robin tournament. Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Since about the year 2000, most of the top 10 women have held the GM title. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women.
