Desafinado
"Desafinado" (a Portuguese word, usually rendered into English as "Out of Tune", or as "Off Key") is a 1959 bossa nova song and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with lyrics (in Portuguese) by Newton Mendonça. Background "Desafinado" was originally a response to critics who claimed that bossa nova was a new genre for singers who can't sing. The English language lyrics were written by Jon Hendricks and "Jessie Cavanaugh" (a pseudonym used by The Richmond Organisation). Another English lyric, more closely based on the original Portuguese lyric (but not a translation) was written by Gene Lees, and appears on some recordings as well. Chart performance The version by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd (from the album ''Jazz Samba'') was a major hit in 1962, reaching number 15 and number 4 on ''Billboard''′s pop and easy-listening charts, respectively; their definitive rendering also reached number 11 in the UK. Ary de Resende Barroso (1903–1964), better known as Ary Barroso, was a Brazilian composer, pianist, soccer commentator, and talent-show host on radio and TV. Haroldo Barbosa (March 21, 1915 — September 6, 1979) was a Brazilian comedian, journalist, and composer. Biography He was a childhood friend of Noel Rosa, Almirante, Braguinha, and Aracy de Almeida. During his more than forty years of artistic career, he performed more than three hundred Portuguese versions of foreign songs. Fotografia (Antônio Carlos Jobim Song)
"Fotografia" (also known as "Photograph") is a bossa nova song written and composed in 1959 by Antônio Carlos Jobim. English lyrics were published in 1965 by Ray Gilbert. "Fotografia" was one of Jobim's first compositions for which he wrote the words as well as the music. According to author Ruy Castro, this came about partly because Jobim's songwriting partner, Vinicius de Moraes, had left Rio de Janeiro to take up a diplomatic post in Montevideo, Uruguay, during much of 1958 and 1959. The change allowed Jobim to work with other lyricists, such as close friend Newton Mendonça, Dolores Duran and Aloísio de Oliveira, and to try his hand at penning his own lyrics. Jazz critic Gary Giddins, writing in The New Yorker, referred to "Fotografia" as an "ingenious" composition full of "flirtatious romance," while Mark Holston at Jazziz Magazine said the song was "mesmerizing." Dorival Caymmi (; April 30, 1914 – August 16, 2008) was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, actor, and painter active for more than 70 years, beginning in 1933. He contributed to the birth of Brazil's bossa nova movement, and several of his samba pieces, such as "''Samba da Minha Terra''", "''Doralice''" and "''Saudade da Bahia''", have become staples of ''música popular brasileira.'' Equally notable are his ballads celebrating the fishermen and women of Bahia, including "''Promessa de Pescador''", "''O Que É Que a Baiana Tem?''", and "''Milagre''". Newton Mendonça
Newton Ferreira de Mendonça (February 14, 1927 – November 22, 1960) was a musician, composer, and lyricist. He began as a pianist in 1950. Mendonça was born in Rio de Janeiro. In 1953 he started working with Antônio Carlos Jobim, something for which he is best known. Mendonça went on to co-compose music and lyrics for Desafinado, Meditação, and Samba de uma nota só. In 1959 he had his first heart attack, but his songs continued gaining attention.
