Etnesjøen or Etne is the administrative centre of Etne municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located at the inner end of the Etnefjorden, along the European route E134 highway, about south of the village of Skånevik and about northeast of the village of Ølensjøen (in neighboring Vindafjord municipality). The village is located along the river Etneelva in a large river valley surrounded by mountains and a fjord. The lake Løkjelsvatnet lies about west of the centre of the village of Etnesjøen. There are three historic churches in the greater Etnesjøen area: Gjerde Church, Grindheim Church, and Stødle Church. It is located in the Traditional districts of Norway, traditional district of Sunnhordland, although it is also sometimes considered to be part of the district of Haugaland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Etnesjøen. Other villages in the municipality include Skånevik (village), Skånevik and Fjæra. The two largest villages in the municipality are Etnesjøen with 1,159 residents and Skånevik with 594 residents (all figures from 1 January 2015). Etnefjorden
Etnefjorden is a fjord on the border between Vestland and Rogaland counties in Norway. The majority of the fjord lies in the municipality of Etne, but a small part of it also lies in the neighboring municipality of Vindafjord in Rogaland county. The long fjord flows from the village of Etnesjøen to the west into the Skånevikfjorden/Hardangerfjorden. Skånevik (village)
Skånevik is a village in Etne municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located along the Skånevikfjorden, near the entrance to the Åkrafjorden. The village lies across the fjord from the village of Utåker in neighboring Kvinnherad municipality. The municipal centre of Etnesjøen lies about straight south across a mountain, although one must drive about around the mountain to get there. The village has a population (2019) of 571 and a population density of . Historically, the village was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Skånevik which existed until 1965. Skånevik Church was the main church for the old municipality, and it is still in use in the village today. Stødle Church
Stødle Church ( no, Stødle kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Etne Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Etnesjøen. It is one of the churches for the Etne parish which is part of the Sunnhordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, stone and wood church was built in a long church design in 1160 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church has been renovated and expanded several times over the centuries, and it currently seats about 245 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1329, but the church was not new that year. The original stone church had a rectangular nave and a narrower, rectangular chancel. This building was likely built around the year 1160.
