Etelvina Andreu
Etelvina Andreu Sánchez (born 1969) is the General Director of Consumer and Citizen Services of the Spanish Ministry of Health and Social Politics. In addition to her political career, she has also specialised in research into the pancreas. Background Andreu was born in Alicante on 6 March 1969. She holds a degree in physics from the University of Valencia, and a doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Alicante. Career She started her professional career as a researcher at the University of Alicante, and later she worked as a professor at the Miguel Hernández University. She co-authored several well-cited papers on the functioning of the pancreas. In 2004 she was appointed as the representative of the Spanish government ('' Subdelegada del Gobierno'') in Alicante. Pancreas
The pancreas is an organ of the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates. In humans, it is located in the abdomen behind the stomach and functions as a gland. The pancreas is a mixed or heterocrine gland, i.e. it has both an endocrine and a digestive exocrine function. 99% of the pancreas is exocrine and 1% is endocrine. As an endocrine gland, it functions mostly to regulate blood sugar levels, secreting the hormones insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide. As a part of the digestive system, it functions as an exocrine gland secreting pancreatic juice into the duodenum through the pancreatic duct. This juice contains bicarbonate, which neutralizes acid entering the duodenum from the stomach; and digestive enzymes, which break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in food entering the duodenum from the stomach.
