Estonia At The 1992 Summer Olympics
Estonia competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. It was the first Olympiad after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Estonia was one of three ex-Soviet republics to compete individually, with Latvia and Lithuania being the other two, instead of competing on the Unified Team. 37 competitors, 33 men and 4 women, took part in 35 events in 13 sports. Helena Silm
Helena Kannus (née Silm; married name Thalson; born 16 March 1963) is an Estonian para athletics competitor. She was born in Tallinn. In 1988 she graduated from the special school Tartu Emajõgi School. She started her sporting exercising in 1980. Until 1988 he exercised swimming under the guidance of Rein Põldme. Since 1992 she started to exercise athletics. She is competed at paralympic games from 1992 to 2004. Swimming At The 1992 Summer Paralympics
Swimming at the 1992 Summer Paralympics consisted of 163 events, 88 for men and 75 for women. Because of ties for third place in the women's 50 metre freestyle B3 and men's 50 metre freestyle B2 events, a total of 165 bronze medals were awarded. Starting in 1992, there was a move away from Les Autres specific classifications to functional based classification systems at the Paralympic Games. This was realized in swimming, where Les Autres sportspeople competed directly against people with other disabilities including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries and amputations. As a result, the 1992 Games saw the total number of classes for people with physical disabilities drop from 31 to 10. Marge Kõrkjas
Marge Kõrkjas (born 8 May 1974) is an Estonian Paralympic swimmer with a vision impairment, who has won seven medals at four Paralympics. Competitive career Born in Rakvere, Kõrkjas first participated at the Paralympics at the 1992 Barcelona Games, where she won a silver medal in the Women's 50 m Freestyle B2 event and a bronze medal in the Women's 100 m Freestyle B2 event.. To prepare for the 1996 Games, she trained with abled-bodied swimmers, saying of this "They went into a constant uproar. We got to train at the same time, slowly and quietly, no-one noticed us." Her coach going into Atlanta was Rein Põldme. The city of Tartu contributed 10,000 krooni a year to the Kullman swimming pool where Kõrkjas trained to rent it out for use by children and disabled swimmers, but shortly before the start of the Paralympics, they discontinued funding as the pool requested an increase to 50,000 krooni a year for continued use of the pool. Athletics at the 1992 Summer Paralympics consisted of 239 events, 152 for men and 62 for women. Because of a tie in the first position of the men's 100m in class B1 and another tie also happened in the third place of the high jump event in the b2 class for men. 240 gold medals, 238 silver and 240 bronze were awarded. Swimming, athletics and table tennis used a medical based classification system for the Barcelona Games. Annely Ojastu (born 10 August 1960 in Tartu) is an Estonian Paralympic athlete. At the 1992 Barcelona Games, she won a silver medal in the Women's 100 m TS4 event. At the 1996 Atlanta Games, she won a gold medal in the Women's 100 m T42–46 event and two silver medals in the Women's 200 m T42–46 and Women's Long Jump F42–46 events.
