Estação Carandiru
''Estação Carandiru'' ("Carandiru Station") is a 1999 novel-memoir by Brazilian physician and AIDS specialist Drauzio Varella. The story is based on Varella's time as a physician volunteering at Carandiru Penitentiary in São Paulo from 1989 up to the 1992 massacre which left 111 inmates dead, but is made up of fictionalized incidents and characters. With more than 500,000 copies sold, ''Estação Carandiru'' is one of the all-time best-sellers in Brazil and was adapted into the 2003 film '' Carandiru'' directed by Héctor Babenco. Varella is portrayed by Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos in the film. Antônio Drauzio Varella (Brazilian Portuguese: ; born May 3, 1943 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian doctor, educator, scientist and medical science popularizer in the press and TV, as well as best-selling author. In addition to medicine, Varella is a public commentator on issues such as prison conditions, social welfare, government, literature and his professed atheism and skepticism. Varella came from a family of Portuguese and Spanish descent from São Paulo. He studied medicine at the Medical School of the University of São Paulo. While a student, he was one of the founders of a pre-med preparatory course with João Carlos di Genio and other colleagues, where he taught chemistry for several years. Carandiru Penitentiary, officially São Paulo House of Detention (Portuguese language, Portuguese: ''Casa de Detenção de São Paulo'') was a prison located in São Paulo, Brazil. The prison was designed and built by Samuel das Neves in 1920, when it was considered a model-prison to meet the new demands of the 1890 criminal code. It was operational from 1956 to 2002 and, at its peak, was South America, South America's largest penitentiary, housing over 8,000 inmates. In 1992 it was the site of the Carandiru massacre. It was demolished in 2002. Drauzio Varella, a noted Brazilian physician, volunteered as an unpaid physician in Carandiru from 1989 to 2001, in particular to address its AIDS epidemic. ''Carandiru'' is a 2003 Brazilian drama film directed by Héctor Babenco. It is based on the book '' Estação Carandiru'' by Dr. Drauzio Varella, a physician and AIDS specialist, who is portrayed in the film by Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos. ''Carandiru'' tells some of the stories that occurred in Carandiru Penitentiary, which was the biggest prison in Latin America.
