Estación Chillán
Estación Chillán, is a railway station of the Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado, located in Chillán, Chile. It is the main railway station in the Bío Bío Region. It is located on Brasil avenue. Estación Chillán is part of the Red Sur EFE, the TerraSur inter-city service has its final stop here. Previously the Red Sur EFE continued from here to the south; to the city of Temuco, but the passenger service was definitively closed in 2009. The nearby Maria Teresa Bus Terminal is within walking distance from the Station. Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado (abbreviated EFE, lit. ''State Railway Company'') is the national railway and the oldest state-run enterprise in Chile. It manages the infrastructure and operating rail services in the country. Track gauge The track gauge is Indian gauge in the south and in the north. The Santiago Metro uses . History The company was created on January 4, 1884 by means of the purchase of the companies that exploited the longitudinal routes and the Santiago – Valparaíso route. Since then, the company acquired the railways of the sodium nitrate mining companies in the north of Chile. From 1913 on the network of the EFE extends from Iquique to Puerto Montt. TerraSur
TerraSur (previously known as EFE Chillán) is a Chilean Inter-city rail service, opened in 2001 between Santiago and Chillán, on the ''Chilean Central Valley''. It is operated by the ''Trenes Regionales Terra S.A.'', a subsidiary of the Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado (EFE). Covering almost 400 km in less than 5 hours, it is the fastest public transportation between those cities. Currently it is one of the only inter-city services that still operates in the country, (the other intercity rail service is the Alameda-Temuco train, a seasonal train) and is the fastest rail service in South America, with an operational speed reaching 150 km/h. Since June 2012, TerraSur has two daily services on each direction, between Santiago and Chillán, increasing to three on Mondays. Temuco
Temuco () is a city and commune, capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located south of Santiago. The city grew out from a fort of the same name established in 1881 during Chile's invasion of Araucanía. Temuco lies in the middle of the historic Araucanía, a traditional land of the indigenous Mapuche. Temuco's central place in Araucanía with easy access to the Andean valleys, lakes and coastal areas makes it a hub for tourism, agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as a communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of Araucanía.
