Essex Johnson
Essex L. Johnson (October 15, 1946 – October 29, 2020) was a professional American football running back for eight seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals and one season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. College career Johnson played defensive back/wingback at Grambling State University for legendary coach Eddie Robinson. By his final season in 1967 he helped lead the team to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles. In 2012, Johnson was inducted into the Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame. Professional career Early years Johnson was drafted in the 6th round (156th overall) of the 1968 Common Draft by the expansion Cincinnati Bengals. Although he was drafted as a defensive back, he was converted to halfback once in the NFL. A running back (RB) is a member of the offensive backfield in gridiron football. The primary roles of a running back are to receive American football plays#Offensive terminology, handoffs from the quarterback to Rush (American football)#Offense, rush the ball, to line up as a receiver to catch the ball, and Blocking (American football), block. There are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play, depending on the offensive formation. Jess Phillips (American Football)
Jess Willard Phillips Jr. (born February 28, 1947) is an American former professional football player who played running back for 10 seasons in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL). He began his pro career with the AFL's Cincinnati Bengals in 1968, and also played for the NFL's Bengals as well as the New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots. Early life Phillips grew up in Beaumont, Texas, the oldest of four children. He attended Charlton-Pollard High School. He played college football at Michigan State University, where he played safety on defense. He played in one of the greatest college football games of all-time, the historic 10-10 tie between undefeated MSU and undefeated Notre Dame. He was a mathematics major.
