Essex (album)
''Essex'' is the fourth solo studio album by English singer Alison Moyet, released on 21 March 1994 by Columbia Records. The album, named after the artist's native Essex, England, reached 24 on the UK Albums Chart and includes the singles "Falling", " Whispering Your Name", "Getting into Something" and "Ode to Boy". A deluxe edition of ''Essex'' was released by BMG on 25 November 2016. Background Having demanded greater artistic freedom from her record company, Moyet was left to record her third album '' Hoodoo'' without input from the label. Upon the album's release in 1991, sales were not as strong as her previous efforts. When Moyet began work on her next album project, she was again given freedom by the label. Alison Moyet
Geneviève Alison Jane Ballard ( ; born 18 June 1961) is an English singer noted for her powerful bluesy contralto voice. She came to prominence as half of the duo Yazoo (also known as Yaz), but has since mainly worked as a solo artist. Her worldwide album sales have reached a certified 23 million, with over two million singles sold. All nine of her studio albums and three compilation albums have charted in the top 30 of the UK Albums Chart, with two of them reaching number one. She has also achieved nine top 30 singles and six top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart. Her most recent album, her ninth, ''Other'', was released 16 June 2017. The Official Charts (legal name: The Official UK Charts Company Limited) is a British inter-professional organization that compiles various "official" record charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. In the United Kingdom, its charts include ones for singles, albums and films, with the data compiled from a mixture of downloads, purchases (of physical media) and streaming. The OCC produces its charts by gathering and combining sales data from retailers through market researchers Kantar, and claims to cover 99% of the singles market and 95% of the album market, and aims to collect data from any retailer who sells more than 100 chart items per week. Getting Into Something
"Getting into Something" is a song by British singer-songwriter Alison Moyet, released in May 1994 as the third single from her fourth studio album ''Essex''. It was written by Moyet and Pete Glenister and produced by Ian Broudie. Background Columbia had rejected the original recording of ''Essex'' and insisted that it be re-recorded to create a more commercial package. The label hired Ian Broudie to produce various tracks for the re-recorded version; one of which was "Getting into Something". The song was selected as the album's third single. For its release as a single, "Getting into Something" was remixed. The mixing was handled by Dave Bascombe. A "Midnight Mix" of the song was also created by Bay Route. Jules Shear
Jules Mark Shear (born March 7, 1952) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He wrote the Cyndi Lauper hit single " All Through the Night" and The Bangles' hit "If She Knew What She Wants", and charted a hit as a performer with "Steady" in 1985. Life and early career Shear was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He attended the University of Pittsburgh. He distinguished himself with the Pitt Glee Club where he led a special side ensemble called Wooden Music, which used acoustic instruments, in a foreshadowing of his "Unplugged" concept. One of his noted songs of the time, which he performed in concerts with the glee club, was "Always in the Morning". Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. It produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music and to the UK's own shoegaze music scene. The movement brought British alternative rock into the mainstream and formed the backbone of a larger British popular cultural movement, Cool Britannia, which evoked the Swinging Sixties and the British guitar pop of that decade. Britpop was a media-driven focus on bands which emerged from the independent music scene of the early 1990s. Although the term was viewed as a marketing tool, and more of a cultural moment than a musical style or genre, its associated bands typically drew from the British pop music of the 1960s, glam rock and punk rock of the 1970s and indie pop of the 1980s. The two friends borrowed $20,000 from relatives and started the publication in a barn in Colorado. Subtitled "The Art, Business and Technology of Making Music", it became known for its extended and thorough articles about the stars of rock music. ''Musician'' was not intended to be a fan magazine—the founders envisioned it as a publication about the musician's craft, and as a result, it earned it the respect of people in the music business.
