Essex, Montana
Essex is an unincorporated community in Flathead County, Montana, United States. Located in the northwestern part of the state, Essex lies along the Hi-Line railroad line, near Glacier National Park, southwest of East Glacier and southeast of West Glacier. Amtrak's ''Empire Builder'' makes a flag stop at Essex station, westbound at 7:41pm and eastbound at 8:55am. The Izaak Walton Inn hotel is close to the Amtrak station platform. Essex also is home to a small BNSF Railway yard. East Glacier, Montana
East Glacier Park (Blackfeet: , "Big Tree Lodge") is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Glacier County, Montana, United States. The population was 363 on the 2010 United States Census. The Great Northern Railway platted the community of Midvale in the 1890s. The town name was eventually changed to Glacier Park and officially became East Glacier Park in 1949. History 2022 attack On July 19, 2022, 37-year-old Derick Amos Madden rammed his pickup truck (a Toyota Tacoma) into a Syracuse, New York, family in East Glacier Park Village. After crashing, he emerged with a shotgun and fatally shot the father and his 18-month-old daughter. He also critically injured the mother and the sister-in-law, the latter of whom had been in a relationship with Madden. Marias Pass
Marias Pass (elevation ) is a mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains in the western US state of Montana. Lying on the southern border of Glacier National Park, it is traversed by US Highway 2 and by the BNSF Hi-Line Subdivision. The pass is the lowest crossing of the Continental Divide between Canada and central New Mexico , and is the northernmost pass in the US open to automobile traffic year-round. Izaak Walton Inn
The Izaak Walton Inn is a historic inn in Essex, Montana, USA. It was originally built as the Izaak Walton Hotel in 1939 by the Great Northern Railway as a soup kitchen and lodgings for railway workers. The hotel was also originally envisioned as a potential official southern gateway to Glacier National Park, hence its size, but World War II intervened and that plan never materialized. Today, the inn is served by Essex station, the only request stop on Amtrak's ''Empire Builder'' route. A van from the inn meets both the morning eastbound and the evening westbound Empire Builders to convey passengers between the station and the inn. The Tudor Revival inn is named after Sir Izaak Walton, the English writer and fisherman. Empire Builder
The ''Empire Builder'' is an Amtrak long-distance passenger train that operates daily between Chicago and either Seattle or Portland via two sections west of Spokane.
